the Two Lands are trapped in drought and The Archon offers his life to appease the Rain Queen and return water to the land but as the Archon's body travels through the Nine Houses of Mourning on his journey to his tomb and the search begins for his successor, a 10 year old boy into whose body the God has transferred, Mirany realises that she is at the centre of a web of conspiracy, coercion and danger. With the scribe Seth, attempting to sell his knowledge of the tombs to the mysterious tomb robbers The Jackal and The Fox in return for water, the most precious commodity in the drought stricken Lands, and ex musician Oblek who should have been killed along with the rest of the Archon's retinue to accompany him to the underworld, a twisting turning tale of intrigue begins as the group are pursued by the nefarious general Argelin and treachery within the Nine.

This was a fantastic book about a young girl, who is a servant to the god. She finds out the fact that the oracle(how they talk to the god) is being used so the general, Areglin, can gain power. Her and her friends are given the command to purify the oracle once again. Will they succeed or will the oracle forever be controlled by Areglin?
I would recommend this book to any higher level readers interested in ancient civilizations. This could also be a good book for any reader with a taste for action and suspense. I would give this book a 4.5 out of five. The book in some parts have very hard vocabulary so be ready to do a lot of re-reading

This one was nominated for the Beehive Book Award a couple of years ago. Fisher creates an interesting world where the god communes with his creation. She throws in a bit of ancient Egypt with some ancient Greece and probably tastes of several other ancient cultures to create a gripping story.

In a world long ago and far away, the rain has not come for many months. The Oracle says the Archon, he who is the god among us, must die and go to the Rain Queen to bring the water to the people. Is it really the Oracle that has spoken, or is the Speaker twisting the words to suit her purposes?

Mirany, newly appointed Bearer of the God, hears the Archon’s final words. Words that tell of a conspiracy and that charge Mirany with finding the Archon’s true successor. Once unsure of the god’s existence, Mirany now seems to hear his voice in her mind. Before she even has time to sort out her own feelings, she finds herself on an adventure of a lifetime with some unlikely companions.

Can an overweight, drunk musician, an ambitious scribe and a young priestess find a way to thwart the Speaker and General Argelin in their plot to take over all that is sacred to the people? Who is to be trusted in a land of conspiracy?

This first book in a trilogy will lead readers on an action packed journey through a culture that will remind you of Ancient Greece or Egypt. You will be left anxious to find out more about Mirany and her fellow adventurers.
