My absolute favorite of Sharon Shinn's books. Apparently most people find it boring, but I loved the philosophical and religious debates, the triumphante/fidele dichotomy and the understated positive relationship between the two religions, and the character of Jovieve. And while this wasn't a...

Not one of Shinn's best. While it is interesting to read about a very earth-like, futuristic modern culture that worships the goddess instead of a god - Shinn's talent in making the characters do this is seamless - some things are a bit silly.

The police investigating the murder are...

Ugh. This book drags for about the first 100 pages. Then it gets mildly better but by that time anything feels like a ray of sunshine. This book did not trip my trigger.

Apparently most people find it boring, but I loved the philosophical and religious debates, the triumphante/fidele dichotomy and the understated positive relationship between the two religions, and the character of Jovieve. And while this wasn't a mystery novel per se, the mystery was involving and a perfect set-up for the romance. Besides, it's set on a desert planet, and I love desert planets in fantasy.

The police investigating the murder are like modern TV cops, overworked, bureaucratic, elite and brawling toughs. I have my doubts that such people would name their organization "Moonchild" like some sort of flowery hippie cult.

And sadly, the other plotline of the main characters is just another study of women as whore and virgin/madonna and the man who gets to choose how he prefers his women to be. He shows an aversion to strong and confident women.

Not one of Shinn's most well known books, but in my opinion one of her best. A police procedural set on an interesting world with great characters.
