“I like Sharon Shinn, usually, but this book was too tedious for me. I realize it is based on Jane Eyre, but it's too much like it for my taste. Just change the futuristic setting back to original Victorian and it's the same thing. The futuristic setting clashed with the archaic way the characters spoke and behaved, which naturally suited the original, but I didn't find it appropriate for this sci-fi version. I guess I was expecting it to be a little more unique than that.”
I'm so with you on that assessment. After 2 chapters of Sharon Shinn writing in Charlotte Bronte's voice (!!!!) and lifting whole lines out of the book (I've read Jane Eyre many times) I just couldn't take it anymore. It was weird and clashy.
