The book takes place in the distant future in Samaria, a world where angels and humans co-exist and many worship a mysterious being know as Jovah. Political intrigue abounds as Raphael, the reigning archangel, tries to hang on to his power...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Beautiful book , a sensational Journy with angels , a heartbreaking love story , it captivates every sense in you.Though i had higher expectations of happily ever after!
Just to add the main female Character is childish/foolish and can annoy the hell out of you.
So if you get irritated easily DO NO READ THE BOOK”
“How I adore this book! I love that the characters are very flawed and not your usual
gentle brooding man, gentle woman type of people. Theya re real, they are annoying, they are bratty and selfish (like we all are sometimes), and they are exremely lovable. At least I found them irresistible to love.
The writing is just heavenly. This book has some of the most beautiful prose I have ever read anywhere. One of my top 10 all time favorite books. LOVE it!”
“Inventive, dark, fascinating plot.”

It was described as a combination of fantasy, science fiction and romance. The first few chapters were nothing that fantastic, but I continued, I was willing to give this book a chance. When they introduced the main character, Rachael, as coming from the dark featured Edori tribe I was thrilled. Finally, I thought, I would have a main character with some flavor, one that wasn't stark white. I was mislead. She was fair skinned with blond tresses. She was different from the Edori, and that signaled she was of importance. Too late for me...I already imagined her differently (heh heh). Apart from my minor irritation at the prevalence of ruling Aryans I was still ready to like this book. However, the more I read the more I hated the main character. I hate her type: the angry, whiny, crazy type. Am I supposed to feel sympathy for someone who throws tantrums? I could not warm up to her. Nor to her husband (not of her choice). Half way through the book I was wondering why I should go on. Nothing happened. Nothing was happening. The warring husband and wife still disliked each other. All the side characters were faceless cardboard cutouts added for filler. The fantasy element was not enough to hold my interest. I was so annoyed. I am extremely surprised people have enjoyed this book. I recommend you do not read it, you'll waste your time.”

It also helps when there's a female lead character with a mind of her own like Rachel here, and a convincing male romantic lead for her to play off of. On rereading, the plot has some questionable turns, but this first novel of Shinn's Samaria series is a very enjoyable afternoon read.”

Shinn has created a world where angels and humans live in harmony praying to god by singing beautiful prayers. In this world, angels are believed to have the ear of the god when they sing and the people appeal for their help when they need the god's assistance. Gabriel has been chosen by the god to be the next Archangel, whose job it is to lead the annual Gloria where angels and humans come together to sing their praises to god. In order to lead the Gloria, he must find and marry the human woman that god has chosen for him to be the angelica.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a unique world with great characters who are endearing despite their flaws. Although it is the first book in a series, it can be read as a stand alone novel. I believe that the next books in the series take place in the same world, but generations later.

“On the one hand, I'd like to give this book three stars due to funny worldbuilding (biblical-like future low-tech science fiction world with angels), but alas the characterizations drove me nuts. How about actually having the characters talk about their problems every once in a while? Particularly irritating female protagonist. Two stars. ”
