Lovely writing with compelling characters. The first half of the book created a lot of promise, which left me a little disappointed with the predictable ending, but overall still a great light read.

As with so many biographical novels, this one was disjointed and hard to follow at times. Regardless, Hayden did a good job in condenscing it into something not just readable, but overall enjoyable as well.

Although I love this author and her stories, I would have to say that this has been my least favorite of all her books . . .

"Just Another Kid" is about a special education teacher, her class of 6 children with social/emotional issues, and her relationship with her aide who needs as much help as one of the students. It's somewhat sensationalized but it's a great read. It seems more real though- not everything is wrapped up nicely and not every kid makes a huge recovery. I've read a few of Hayden's other books, however haven't read any since I started teaching. Reading this one after teaching for 1 1/2 years made it more meaningful to me as I thought about my own students.

This is a pretty funny book but different from her others because it includes helping an alcoholic mother of one of her students in addition to her class. Ladbrooke is an alcoholic parent whom Torey befriends and even accepts as an aide in her class. Class is made up of Lad’s autistic daughter, Leslie, Marianna who is slow but almost normal in other ways, Shamie from Belfast and his cousins Shemoana (quiet, nice) and Geraldine (unhappy, spiteful, revengeful, destructive), and Dirkie who’s a looney obsessed with long blond hair and cats. --Karen Arlettaz Zemek, author of "My Funny Dad, Harry"

This one was a hard one to read but well worth the tears. Stories are very sad and it took a lot out of me. Made myself read only a little a day. Took five seven days to read. Torey Hayden is truly a gift and is not affaid to step out of the box. Do wish I had someone like her when I was in school. My gift came to me in the form of a boyfriend(now husband), he pulled me out and aloud me to live.
