J.R. Tolkien would have loved this book. It kept me hanging on till the end and left me hungry for more.

The ending was good and the Reader does become attached to the characaters but it took too long to get anywhere in the novel. The Reader could skim large quantities of text and not miss anything. Nevertheless, I will finish out the Obsidian Trilogy to find out what happens to Kellan, Idalia,...

Seems to be written for high school boys. Didn't finish it.

Darn good for a random pick from the library. I'll definitely read the next one.

Good, but dark and a bit graphic. I usually read all the books ... but I have yet to finish this trilogy.

If you love books about magic and fantasy with strong female characters then this is the series for you. I love all Lackey books but these are her best in my opinion. Talking unicorns, dragons, elves, and the demon enemy are some of the wonderful characters you will be introduced to. The books are pefection and all Harry Potter book fans should read these too. I highly recommend

Less fluid than Misty Lackey's other works but still a good read. I can very much relate to Kellen and the frustration of needing to find one's path. Eagerly awaiting the last book in the trilogy now!

This was decent, but I'm not going to read this rest of the series. The writing was not the best and there was a lot of repetition...a trait I've noticed in Lackey's Joust. A lot of extra words being used as filler...if you're done with the thought, you don't have to add more words just to add another five pages to your novel...Nothing special...standard fantasy...Deborah Chester's The Sword is a much better start to a trilogy.

I think that this series has the potential to be another grand epic following in the footsteps of Tolkien. This has a bit more human emotion than Tolkien's style and that makes it all the more interesting to me.
