“She doesn't see dead people, but… She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally. Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. “Something is not right with Kaylee Cavanaugh. For nearly as long as she can remember, there have been instances where she has been somehow compelled to scream because of a horrible feeling she gets about some person—a person who then dies. And without fail, all of Kaylee’s premonitions have come true. Kaylee doesn’t want to know why these strange things keep happening to her; she only wishes they would go away because she’s tired of being the freak in the family. But things do quite smooth over when Kaylee catches the eye of Nash, the most popular guy in school. And when beautiful young girls start dropping dead for no reason, Kaylee’s secret compulsion to scream is at risk of being exposed. All the Kaylee knows for sure is that something sinister and probably supernatural is at work, and since she’s the only one who’s aware of the next victim, she’s got to do something to stop it.
My Soul to Take is a paranormal novel filled with danger, mystery, secrets, and romance. I was primarily interested in this book because I loved Vincent’s storytelling in Stray and because I’d never read about banshees or bean sidhes as Irish folktales call them. As fascinating and unique I found Vincent’s take on paranormal beings and the afterlife, and as sweet Kaylee and Nash’s relationship was, there was something about this novel that didn’t quite flow for me. Firstly, Nash’s dedication to Kaylee was suspicious to me; when reading, I had a nagging feeling that Nash was hiding something even after he revealed Kaylee’s true identity. Kaylee’s character was slightly more believable, but her acceptance of the fact that she wasn’t human came a little too quickly. For the most part, though, this wasn’t a huge issue, and I quite enjoyed this creative paranormal mystery and look forward to learning more about Kaylee’s abilities and history in the sequel, My Soul to Save.
This novel will be enjoyed by fans of Stray by Rachel Vincent and Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez.

“This book was a lot better than I thought it would be. This is the first book that I have ever known to have a Banshee as the main character. It is a teen book, however, I feel adults would enjoy this as well. I did.”

She can see when someone around her is going to die. That person gets a dark aura around them and soon after they die. The strangest thing happens to Kaylee, when someone dies. Kaylee’s body seizes up and she gets the sudden urge to scream. Kaylee’s latest episode takes place at the bar in front of Nash.
Kaylee likes Nash but she isn’t sure she can trust him with her secret. Besides it seems that Nash has a secret of his own.
My Soul to Take is the first book in the Soul Screamers series. A brand new series by Rachel Vincent. It is also the first teen novel she has written. I first discovered Ms. Vincent with her highly popular shifter series. Every one of her shifter books is a favorite of mine. So when I learned that Rachel was starting a teen series, I just had to check it out. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this series. Both the characters and the plot were good but it wasn’t as intense as the shifter series. I waivered back and forth about this book and it took me till about the end to realize I really did enjoy this book. Kaylee is just coming into her abilities. I hope to really experience all that she can do in My Soul to Save.

“After the past events all Kaylee really wants is to be normal. She wants to sneak into clubs with her best friend and just have fun. That isn't possible for Kaylee. Not with her 'panic attacks'. Soon Kaylee is going to find out that her episodes aren't what she thinks. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
I was bit surprised at how much I truly enjoyed this book. I had put off reading it for a while because I wanted to read the e-book prequel first and I really don't like reading at the computer. But I finally gave in and read both.
What a great start to a new series. In a genre full of every paranormal/supernatural beasts and/or creatures you could think of Rachel Vincent has created something truly unique. Bean Sidhes or Banshees are something that hasn't been done before. Really who would think you could pull off a book about Bean Sidhes? Rachel Vincent did!
This book is full of mystery and romance. Nash is a great character and from the first moment he stepping into Kaylee's life you love him. The chemistry between them is wonderfully done. How can you deny there passion for each other. Kaylee is a very likable main character. She's a little naive but really that's not her fault.
Overall this is a great start to a new YA series. It stands out among all the others. I'm very much looking forward to My Soul to Save.

Yes | No“After the car accident that has killed her mother and nearly killed her, she was left with her uncle and aunt by her father. Now Kaylee is a teenager, but she has a gift or curse, that depends how you see it. She can sense when someone around her is going to die and when she sees that she has the urge to scream. And Kaylee will do anything to prevent that from happening, because the last time she screamed, her uncle and aunt took her to the Mental Health Institution.
But everything seems to be okay, no more panic attacks, as she calls them. But then one night Kaylee and her best friend Emma sneak into a dance club. The night is going well and even the hottest guy on school Nash has all eyes for Kaylee, but then the moment she lays eyes on a young girl with that black aura around her, she knows it’s all going to happen again, this young girl is going to die…soon.
For some strange reason Nash is the one who can calms her down, before the screaming starts and it even gets worst, when he doesn’t seem turned off by her strange behaviour. Kaylee wonders why he really wants to be with her, does he knows something she’s not?
My Soul to take by Rachel Vincent is her first novel in her Young Adult series, the Soul Screamer. I’ve read the prequel just recently and was very curious to see what would happen to Kaylee after her breakdown and wonder what she really was. Well I can tell you that it will come clear in this first novel.
Kaylee is a strong determined young woman and she has something inside her, something she doesn’t really want, but cannot get rid off. She doesn’t understand it and really think she is loosing her mind. But when the panic attacks get worse and the only person who can calm her during these attacks is the hottest guy in school, Nash Hudson. But what she doesn’t understand is why he’s doing this, she is beautiful, like her best friend Emma or her cousin Sophie, she is just a normal girl.
Then young women are mysteriously dying and Kaylee predicts all of this with her premonitions and knows she has to do something to save the next girl. She turns to her Aunt, but is easily dismissed. But then she overhears her Uncle and Aunt talking to her father on the phone, something about telling her the truth about herself. She is furious and is determined to find out what is going on. But she needs to know now and cannot wait for her father to arrive from Ireland, so she turns to her new boyfriend Nash and what he tells her is something she can hardly believe.
I have to say this novel was a real surprise, I knew that is was going to be a young adult but I didn’t mind at all. The mystery behind Kaylee and her powers, her determination to solve the death of these young girls and even save some is so fabulous, that I couldn’t put the book down, the pages were flying by. I truly can say I enjoyed the book.”
“Kaylee is a normal high school girl, well mostly. It certainly isn't normal that she can tell when people around her are going to die. And it certainly doesn't help that whenever such a person is around Kaylee can't help but scream and scream and scream... Needless to say, screaming and death are the last things Kaylee wants to worry about, particularly when she seems to have caught the eye of one of the most popular guys in school, Nash. Romance is hard to pursue, though, when young girls keep dropping dead. And it seems that Nash just might know more about Kaylee's screaming than he first admits.
My Soul To Take is one of the first novels from Harlequin's new Harlequin Teen line. The novels in this line take advantage of already established names, mostly from the adult romance genre, such as: Gena Showalter, Rachel Vincent, and P.C. Cast. I was curious about this new line of paranormal romance aimed at teens, so when I saw Rachel Vincent in the line up with her beautiful-looking My Soul To Take, I thought it was a great chance to kill two curiosity-birds with one stone.
I was surprised at how strangely refreshing it was to see fantastic creatures other than faeries, werewolves, and vampires for once. In fact, not a single one of these creatures is to be found in My Soul To Take. Instead, the story presents 'bean sidhe' (banshee) and grim reapers. Yes, both are plural. Thus, Vincent definitely gets a plus in the category of originality.
Also, unlike many young adult paranormal novels, Vincent does an excellent job creating Rachel's dysfunctional family: the father that's never there, the aunt and uncle who take Kaylee in, and the bratty cousin who's more like a sister. All of these characters were far better painted than the love interest: Nash. Although I wanted to like Nash and their romance, it just felt stale to me. Perhaps it's a case of everything panning out too easily, but...well, let's just say that I was glad the mystery was intriguing enough to keep me interested. On a similar note, I'd like to have seen more development with Emma, but she turned into nothing more than a plot device as the novel progressed and was completely replaced by the lackluster Nash...
Even though I generally liked the family development, the twist at the end didn't work for me. I won't include spoilers, but instead explain in general terms. The ending seems careless. Yes, there's a tiny, tiny amount of foreshadowing, but it still doesn't quite make the ending fit. And this is even after I really enjoyed the mechanics of the ending, if not the explanation.
My final rating for My Soul To Take was hard to determine. While it was an extremely entertaining and unique novel, I think there are a few things that draw me back from recommending it without reservation. However, I will be looking forward to Vincent's My Soul To Save.”
“Just like the TAKE swirls on the cover draw you in, the book will take you inside of a world you have never heard of. This book is very original. And this new world is full of surprises. I loved everything about this book and would not change a thing about it. I'll be adding this to my favorites.
Kaylee and Nash will become your favorite couple. It's not a lovey dovey and it doesn't move too fast. Kaylee, at first, doesn't trust Nash but he ends up being the only one she can trust. Secrets play a major role in this book and it keeps you in suspense about what will happen next.
One thing I really loved about this book is that Nash is human. He has flaws, just like everyone else. He isn't one of the guys who is perfect, though it sounds like he has the body. 8D. Haha, but what I'm saying is that Nash is his own character and no other can relate to him. I love his character.
So do yourself a favor and read this; but if I were you, I would wait until the sequel gets closer to its release date so you don't have to go through the agony of waiting like me. =) ”
