Kerouac's fractured, impassioned recollections of childhood provide for a deeply personal piece that is as fascinating as it is challenging. It's a tenderly written book full of powerful feelings and reflections, threaded together in a non-linear and abstract fashion.

Unlike On the Road (see my brief review) I think this might not hold up as well if I read it again. It might seem sentimental and self-pitying, I'm afraid. Maybe I'll read it again some day, just to see. I surely did love it back in the day, though.

Heartbreakingly beautiful, one of my favorite Kerouacs.
