Description edit see section history

The 37th Discworld novel is set against a backdrop of the culture of football. Football has come to the ancient city of Ankh-Morpork — not the old fashioned, grubby pushing and shoving, but the new, fast football with pointy hats for goalposts and balls that go gloing when you drop them. • Madame Sharn: Boss of Shatta. Friends with Pepe.
  • Andy Shank: A vehement football suporter. He is a 'face', someone to be feared in the shove or anywhere else.
  • Pepe: A most unusual Dwarf, the inventor of micromail and life partner of Madame Sharn.
  • Carter: One of Trev's friends.
  • Henry: The former Dean at Unseen University. Now Archchancellor at Brazeneck.
  • Mrs Whitlow: Thehead housekeeper at Unseen University.
  • Drumknott: Assistent to Lord Vetinari.
  • Rincewind: He is a failed student at the Unseen University for wizards in Ankh-Morpork, and is often described by scholars as "the magical equivalent to the number zero". He spends just about all of his time running away from various bands of people who want to kill him for various reasons. The fact that he's still alive and running is explained in that although he was born with a wizard's spirit, he has the body of a long-distance sprinter. Rincewind is also reputed for being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters. His unique "skill" is implied to be due to being the chosen one of "The Lady", the anthropomorphic personification of luck.
  • Dr Hix: Professor of Post-Mortem Communication.
  • Lady Margolotta: A reformed vampire. Involved with Vetinari. Took Nutt under her wing.
  • Charlie: Skeleton who works at the office of Dr. Hix.

  • Bengo Macarona: A professor at Unseen University and very talented at football.
  • Dave Likely: Trev's dad. Died in the streets.
  • Smeems: Nutt's boss in the vats. A cruel, petty, small-minded man.
  • Samuel Vimes: Vimes is the Commander of the City Watch, the burgeoning police force of the Discworld's largest city, Ankh-Morpork. His rise from drunk policeman to respected member of the aristocracy, and the growth and development of the Watch under his command, have together been one of the major threads of the Discworld series. Born into poverty, he is now a highly reluctant member of the nobility, having been made both a knight and a duke. He is married to Sybil Ramkin, the richest woman in the city.
  • Turnipseed: Brazeneck's equivalent to Ponder Stibbons.
  • Mrs Atkinson: A mean old lady.
  • Mister Ottomy: A bledlow at Unseen University.
