URG. I'm glad I didn't have to buy this book. I kept thinking I'd missed something, sending me searching through what I'd already read, as characters were introduced as if we were supposed to know who they were. As usual, Martha Grimes writes an intricately woven mystery that I find fascinating from the first page. This time Richard Jury not only has a girl friend, but he's cheating on her. Amazing - is this the same guy who hasn't even had a date in many of the previous novels?

I really liked the book; the tone and pacing made for a quick, enjoyable and humorous read. I like Grimes "high brow" mysteries, in general, and I like Richard Jury but this book just seemed to end. If I had been listening on a book tape, I would have thought I was missing a CD or two. I don't really understand the ending. A detective that Jury was having a sexual obsession with gets in a bad accident but why or who caused it or how it's related to the case wasn't clear. Jury starts the novel in bed with the Coroner but then she seems to just disappear (does she care about the affair, will they talk about it? were they serious?). I'm not sure if there is a dust II, but ultimately, the book was unsatisfying.

Always enjoy Superintendent Richard Jury, in fact, I think I'd like to meet the man one day. He's absolutely gorgeous for a fictional character. This one had a bit too much action in the bedroom, living room, hallway, etc. I don't really need that many details, they were not truely relevant to the storyline accept as a set up for the final page. Which, I thought was very sweet.

Not as captivating as "The Old Wine Shades", but I love the cast of characters in the Richard Jury mysteries, including the animals (although Cyril the evil cat only made one appearance in this one).

URG. I'm glad I didn't have to buy this book. I kept thinking I'd missed something, sending me searching through what I'd already read, as characters were introduced as if we were supposed to know who they were. Further, the sex was gratuitous, the plot confusing and the people not fleshed out at all. When a book makes me look on the internet to figure out Whodunnit, and I am NOT stupid, the author has missed the boat. A GIANT miss.

After reading many, many Grime's novels, I must have "hit the wall." Dust was a crashing bore. In the past I was amused by the returning cast of characters drawn into every novel (the pub crowd) and Melrose Plant's filling yet another undercover role to assist Jury's detective work and Plant's Aunt and Carol Anne and the neighbor and the dogs and on and on and on. This book belabors a William James connection and Grimes fills up pages by having her characters discuss the various James' themes and characters. She adds some spice by thrusting Jury in a highly sexual relationship (can't wait to get the clothes off, knocking over furniture, breaking lamps, frightening the poor landlady). Plus she includes snarky and gratuitous political comments about America. I gave the novel two stars out of pity.

I've only just started this book but I can tell you the humour has me rolling ... I'm thinking this will be another 5 star!! Martha Grimes is making it happen again!
