I think this is by far the weakest of the three books in the Mage Wars trilogy.
Instead of being about the protagonists from the first two books, this plot now follows the lives and adventures of their children.

Lackey is good at writing competent and strong female leads, and that shows in this book. Unlike the previous two books, half the leading cast here is female, and our heroine is clever and holds her own with her male counterpart.

    A good adventure/survival story.

This one is almost more of a suspense - at least to me -. A gryphon and girl being pursued by dangerous creatures of the jungle.

This is not my favorite of her Valdemar books. The main story line was slow getting going, but the ending was quite good. I still recommend it if you are a fan of her others, just to see where it goes.

I've enjoyed reading all the books connected to Valdemar. To get a complete picture of that world, you need to read all the books.
