Didn’t Like It“I am so happy this series is over, so that I can stop reading it. Those who loved the first three will likely enjoy the last book in the series. I found there to be nothing to the conclusion to make slogging through the series remotely worth my time. To top it all off, in the epilogue,...” see full review » see other reviews » |

And you couldn't really predict what would end up happening. I loved the parallels between Diana and her Aunt Edith. That was very artfully done. I also liked how Godberson kept to her theme of, yeah, love is great. But it isn't necciscarilly eternal and you can't expect it to last forever. This series was really good at demonstrating that there is life after that mind numbing forever soul mate love. It may not be perfect, but it is good. And you can't try to corner it because it just won't be the same. Good lessons about love and very reasonable. But highly entertaining. And dramatic. If that makes any sense at all.”

I think ultimately (SPOILER) that Diana choose to love herself. She choose her happiness, knowing that ultimately that living a life that was not for her would not let her have a fulfilled life. I guess that really is what the series has been about. Can't wait to see what Godberson writes next.”

I was so looking forward to the demise of Lina - can't decide if I was satisfied with it. Wish she was left penniless, after all she was so cruel. If her sister had not come to her, doubt she would have looked for Claire and took her in. Could have rooted for underdog Lina if she would have been kind enough to bring her sister up in the world sooner, instead of looking down her nose at her, hence- lets see her fall!
Loved too the visual of 1900 Cuba- instead of sounding like a yellow fever infested island of policial/military turmoil, I do hope it was like a true paradise worthy of a Carnival port of call.
I never saw that ending coming, of Henry and Di and part of me feels what a chase and a let down. But then, maybe good for her???
Elizabeth is still the tragic hero.
Read this one slower than normal, savored the last book in this series which I have come to look forward to reading. The social standings- the restrictions, the wealth (untouchable!!) the expectations- or lack there of for girls and guys- all were detailed enough to bring you into that time period without sounding like a lecture from the Industrial Revolution of America 101. I hope the author has something more up her sleeve. ”
“The ending was horrible. Throughout the whole series I've wanted something to happen, and in the end when it could've happened it didn't. I was very disappointed and I'm sure many other readers are, too. Great writing though.”

It's hard to believe all 4 books were set in one year's time frame. That was one busy year! I really dislike Elizabeth's and Diana"s mom! What an ineffective person. She does nothing to protect her daughters. She just puts them out there and tries to marry them off and then complains when it turns out badly. How could she not be visiting Elizabeth and let Snowden get away with his evil plot for so long?”

To top it all off, in the epilogue, Godbersen has one of the characters think to herself what a fitting end o the story one dramatic development is. Can you say self-congratulation? The ending is not a happy one, which may be more realistic, but is not what I think most readers of this series are going to want.”
