Didn’t Like It

I defy anyone reading this book to find a single sympathetic character. These stories are so dark and so depressing that you might as well slit your throat after reading them. This book was amazing. It's a collection of short stories that in many ways are outrageous and ridiculous, and in so many other ways are beautifully written and incredibly deep. the stories represent human struggle and success as well as failure. the first story is about a man's failed marrige and the way he finds comfort in something as small as his aquarium. the second talks about two brothers who hate each other and have hated each other their entire lives, but find a way to accept each other in the wilderness. i liked how it showed the way humans can fail miserably and then how they can pick themselves right up. this theme gives a lot of hope to all readers. i recommend this to anyone looking for a different kind of story that will really make you think.

Brilliantly written short stories. 'On the Show' was disturbing and I'm finding it hard to forget. The first and last stories are the strongest. That last one, which gives the collection its title, is something else. I plan to buy this and re-read some of it again.

It's kind of a shame, in my humble opinion, because the writer is talented. But I find reading this kind of fiction such a downer experience that I don't gravitate to it anymore, just as I don't like seeing movies full of gratuitous violence for its own sake.

Really good short story collection. The last story is the best. Check it out.

I particularly enjoyed "The Brown Coast", "Retreat", and the title story.

For an experienced reader it is a true joy to discover a writer with such an extraordinary spark of originality. Each of these stories burn by with a fever of excitement. The language is uniformly contemporary (even in the title story concerning Viking marauders), with such images as: "They broke their hearts on schedule always in the same indigo half hour of the morning" and "A connoisseur of the chance encounter he would have strived to speak the language of cockatoos if one touched down beside him." In particular, the story "On the Show" has an entire wealt of material that could easily be expanded into an engrossing novel length work. I do not remember any book of short stories exciting me as much since reading Tim Gautreaux's Same Places, Same Things, over ten years ago.
