Jane Stern is fifty two years old,not happy in her life, needing a change and some motivation. One day while doing errands a sign outside the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Company caught her eye. It read VOLS. WANTED......FIRE EMS.
Facing her fears and depression she jumps in feet first forever altering her life.
She is very open, honest and yes at times arrogant sounding.
You can feel her growth and stumbles.

If you are an NPR addict you will recognize that the author is the better half of Jane and Michael Stern, columnists for Gourmet magazine and contributors to The Splendid Table radio program. (They have the ideal job: they travel around the country, visit locally famous restaurants, eats lots of great food, and report on it for the magazine and radio program.)

This book, however, has nothing to do with food. Jane Stern found that in her mid-fifties she was overweight and depressed, and decided to do the thing she was the most afraid of, which was train to be a volunteer EMT for her little town in Connecticut. She amazed herself and her friends and family by doing just that, and this is the story of her transformation and her encounters with her small town’s emergencies.

A really interesting memoir of a woman who deals with her depression and anxiety by confronting her fears head on. Very inspiring and funny!

Foodie Jane Stern shows another side of herself when she becomes an EMT for her small Connecticut town. This book was much more interesting and entertaining than the made-for-TV movie that resulted from it.
