Starting out this book was a bit of a yawn - and a bit confusing! Then, the whole incident in Bosnia occurred (hehe) and my eyes were glued to the pages from there on out! I stayed up until three o'clock one morning because I could not put this book down! This was the first book that ever made me...

The idea is both hilarious and horrific: voluntary suicide of baby boomers in exchange for tax breaks for their surviving relatives. But that's Christopher Buckley for ya.

Buckley has mastered the art of dark comedy and political satire; this book is no exception.

Take the usual stellar Buckley plot, characterizations and language, add a senator whose presidential aspirations appear while he was tripping on acid at the JFK presidential library. You get one fantastic book.

Interesting premise, but the potential is really unfulfilled. Still, an amusing read.

I loved this book. It's like a modern day Catch 22. Just when you think the plot can't become any more convoluted it does, but you manage to follow it anyway. The searing humor associated with big government is fantastic.

I had to read this for a class at Towson, and was surprised that it turned out to be pretty good! In the very near future, when the economy is on the verge of collapse, one woman comes up with a solution to end the problems associated with social security: encourage the elderly to kill themselves. It's a very funny book, but raises a lot of interesting questions, and offers equally interesting answers.

How have I missed Christopher Buckley until now? I was vaguely interested in the screen adaptation of his Thank You for Smoking, though I never really got into it. Recently, I saw him on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, touting his new book, Supreme Courtship. It looked good, so I added him to my library book list. Of course, my library sucks and they don't have it, but they did have Boomsday and I think, Thank You for Smoking. So, I got Boomsday this week. It's great! His writing style reminds me a bit of Chuck Palahnuik, but funnier and less disturbing...at least on a visceral level. The above book description does a good job of giving a short synopsis of what's going on in the book, so I'm not going to rehash that. I'm just going to say that all his stuff's going on my To Read list. And after reading Thank You for Smoking, I'm going to give the movie another shot.

The Boomers are ready to retire, Social Security is about to go bust, the old are taxing the young to support them in the manner to which they've become accustomed.

The Gen Xers are ready to rebel and our heroine has the answer -- pay old folks to save Social Security by paying them to kill themselves.

I thought this book had a great premise and I enjoy Buckley's writing sometimes but this book was a complete misfire. First of all, even though the protagonist misses out on going to Yale and endures a military scandal she still leads such an utterly charmed life that her outrage seems completely self absorbed. Buckley makes a running gag of her obsession with Ayn Rand who may be the most humorless author ever. Most of the jokes are really weak. Making fun of crazy animal rights activists and hypocritical politcians is like shooting fish in a barrel. A few landed squarely, I liked the gag about the U. S. being involved in so many wars that other countries felt free to openly taunt us but Buckly doesn't just miss the target with this book most of the time he goes after the wrong targets.
