Gilead, Marilynne Robinson’s first novel since her award-winning Housekeeping came out in 1981, is that rarest of books. It combines lush language with theological wisdom.
Lest you be put off by either descriptive phrase, rest assured you will be caught up in the simple narrative and the...

Gilead is a book that I read for my book group, and to be very honest, I'm not sure I would have finished it had I not felt that I needed to do so for the group discussion. I can't help it, Pulitzer prize and all, but I did not really enjoy it. Don't get me wrong -- Robinson is a very good...

I'm not sure about this book. Story is the thoughts a pastor from Iowa leaves his young son before the man passes away. He is in his seventies with a 7 year old son. There were so many good thoughts in this you need to use post-its to remember them all. But the story doesn't get going until the end, I think.

This is a beatifully-rendered book of an old reverend's musings on life and its meaning. There is no plot, and you cannot read this quickly. I kept getting distracted by my own thoughts as I read it . . .

I read this book and did not like it at all. I did not like the authors writing style or pretty much the concept of the book. The cover made it sound great, but it did not live up to the cover.

Absolutely beautiful writing, gorgeous images. Made me cry when the Reverend Ames talks about marriage as a kind of dying and transfiguration.

An astonishing accomplishment. A quiet, simple story told in the first person that takes hold of you and doesn't let go.

Didn't enjoy it. Only redeeming quality. It had some good thoughts but there was no story line. Hard to follow. I would not recommend this book.

I am glad I finished this book because I appreciated it more then I thought I would. I did not find it a very easy read.
