“As a computer professional and networking guy, I remember the details of this case as if it were yesterday - I was a senior in high school when the suspect was finally caught and put on trial.
Mr. Stoll gives a wonderful accounting of his actions over the year or so that he became the country's foremost hacker hunter, detailing in delicious detail the total lack of support her received from the "three letter entities" that represented law-enforcement.
A fun read, and a good primer in why computer security is as bad as it is today. The technology may have changed (Arpanet is the Internet, we use IM instead of finger), but the story is still the same - someone, somewhere, just doesn't care about the security of his network enough to test, retest, and validate it.”
“If you like books based on government "issues" and things of the past then you'll like this one. It leaves you wondering how much is real and how much is fiction.”

Author Cliff Stoll gives his first-hand account with a welcoming, direct writing style. He doesn't run wild with tech-y computer speak that banks on any reader's insidership. The fun is unreserved, and despite the situation's true graveness (the United States' defense system was nearly compromised), Stoll delivers it with Pink-Panther-like hilarity while steering the awkward team made of he, the good-natured yet unruly Frank Zappa type, and the cold, tight Federal Bureau of Investigation. ”
“I couldn't stop reading this book. I read the entire thing in one day. I loved it.”
