Great reading fiction...something that could very possibly happen.

There are some books that take place in another era but the message is timeless. Even with the differences in dialogue and social manners, the themes in some books transcend and are identifiable. On the Beach is NOT one of those books. It may have been captivating when it first came out, but it definitely is not timeless. The dialogue is dated and the characters and their actions are not believable. I would not recommend this book.

    A classic, but very depressing

Imagine the world after a nuclear holocaust - imagine the world population limited to one tiny seaside town of Australia, with no oil, no power, and not much food. Imagine living with the reality of imminent death every breathing moment. What do people do? Extremely well written and saddenning.

Read this a long time, but remember being very depressed, but this book was so well written. About people living out their lives, knowing they will be dead within a month.

I read this book a long time ago, in high school maybe, and I've always loved it. I'm not sure why, since I'm not usually into sci-fi stuff, but it seems like something that could really happen, so I think it seemed less science fiction-y because of that. Great book.

Great story, great introduction to Nevil Shute. Read this and you'll have to read more by the author.

I found this quite a strange book but very interesting. The futility of knowing that everyone will be dead within a few months but not being able to do anything about it is overwhelming. Makes you wonder what you would do in a similar situation.

Could easily be reality, this book is very disturbing and, in my humble opinion, superbly written.
