Very good read, and an essential work of fantasy. To truly understand the genre, you have to experience this book. Features many then-original ideas that have become--through limited plagiarism on the part of other writers--today's fantasy cliches. They are fresh here.

The book was okay in terms of plot, but it reaallllyy was hard to get into, and then it didn't manage to hold my attention. The only reason I kept reading it is because Miyazaki made a movie out of it, and I wanted to read the book first.

This novel was interesting because it wasn’t like any other wizard stories. The author taught how responsibility is important, and the importance of patience, listening, and recognizing yourself. What I didn’t like about the book was that people changed their names so often that I got so confused. For example, Ged’s name was Dunny first, but then it changed to Sparrowhawk and then later to Ged. But this changing name was important for the wizards in the novel because if someone knew your “true name” then that person can have control over you.

Ged was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, but once he was called Sparrowhawk, a reckless youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

This is an original take on magic. It involves secret languages involving dragons, enemies and friends. It is good how the character evolves from an innocent boy into a powerful wizard. He had to learn to do it through patience and understanding, and that it something we must do for anything we want to be good at.

This story isn't terribly complex, but it has some deeper meanings that aren't easy for all young readers to catch.

I've always been a fan of wizards in fantasy fiction in general. A Wizard of Earthsea is one of my favorite fantasy books. It follows the earliest adventures of the young wizard Ged starting from his humble beginnings up to his dramatic encounter with a mysterious dark being. It's a chockful of powerful magic, courageous friends, sinister foes and lots of dragons. A very spellbinding book indeed.
