“Was an ok read. Didnt talk as much about the animals as I was expecting and it also only mentioned the time period in the last chapter. I would have liked to be able to conjure in my mind when all this was happening. As it was it could have been a 6 bmonths time period or 3 years... and was only revealed at the end that it was 6 months in 2002 and 2003.”

“Conservationist Lawrence Anthony was horrified by the destruction of the Kabul Zoo during the war on Afghanistan, so when the U.S. launched a war on Iraq, he was determined to make sure the animals at the Baghdad Zoo did not face the same fate. Days after the troops arrived in Baghdad, Anthony set out initially to asses the condition of the zoo. This turned into a mission to save the animals and rebuild the zoo in the most challenging of conditions.

With the help of Iraqis, Anthony not only helps the traumatized, sick animals at the Baghdad Zoo recover, but rescues animals that have been kept by Uday Hussein and in the black market in horrible conditions. The Iraqis risk their lives working with Anthony, because although he is South African, anyone perceived to be working with the coalition puts their life at risk.
The book is engaging and a quick read. Anthony gives credit where credit is do (to the Iraqis) and is clearly passionate about his work. The book details many touching accounts of humanity in the most inhumane of conditions. ”

“Although I normally enjoy books about animals, this one slightly annoyed me. I couldn't get past the fact that there are so many people that are essentially animals themselves. I have to commend the animal lovers that are trying to do the right thing.
