Smart, literary, hilarious. I loved it. Jack Spratt is the head of the Nursery Crimes Division of the police, and the criminals he encounters in this book include the Gingerbreadman (as in, "you can't catch me!"), a bear who may be having an affair with the second of the three bears (she of the...

Didn’t Like It

I had a hard time with this book, finding the plot about the bears difficult to follow at times. It seemed more impossible, somehow - an odd sentiment given the subject matter. Die hard Fforde fans will like it, but it might not appeal to everyone.

I found this book incredibly funny. It's a satire not only of fantasy but books in general. The characters regularly refer to the book and plot and even make fun of the author.

Not as good as his Thursday Next series, but still entertaining.

I enjoyed this book much more than the first installment of the Nursery Crime series. Jack and Mary, have once again fallen from the good graces of their police captain. As the story opens, Jack is suffering from PTSD, after having been swallowed whole along with Little Red Riding Hood and Grandmother, by the Big Bad Wolf. He also bought a used car from Dorian Gray, used car salesman, that never needs repairs, no matter what kind of accidents it gets into. Due the car and the PTSD, Jack is suspended from duty, until he is proven sane by the department's psychiatrist. Meanwhile Gingerbread Man, the most heinous criminal/serial killer incarcerated at St. Cerrebellum's Hospital for the Crimally Insane, escapes. This is a case for the NCD...well, it should have been. Instead, the NCD is looking into the disappearance of reporter Goldilocks Hatchett. She was last seen running from the Three Bears Cottage in the Anderson Forrest. That is when the trouble really starts.

If you love the absurd and bad puns you should read this book. it will make you laugh out loud. If I say too much about the plot it will give too much away. You will never think of oatmeal the same way again.

Not as good as Eyre Affair and LIAGB, but humorous word-play and exploration of literature. Perhaps the use of nursery rhymes and childrens' books limits the scope to narrowly. Enjoyable, but not sparkling.
