Candice Pert does an amazing job at giving us an insiders view on both the politics of science and the hard evidence of the effects that our thoughts and feelings have on our health.

An intriguing discussion in mind-body science, with an ample supply of research, data, explanation and discordance.

Interesting book about a scientist turned holistic health advocate. I had this book recommended to me but didn't know what to expect. Mind-body medicine isn't new, Indian and Chinese medicine have been practicing it for ages (chakras and meridians) but it is new to Westerners (read: Americans). I was horrified at the whole scientific methods described in this book. Basically a scientist has a hunch, and then goes on to prove his/her hypothesis, whether it's injecting rats with drugs or mushing up human brains and dosing them with radiation, then 'massaging' the data into a research paper to be published. Much of the outcome of this 'research' is used by drug companies to make synthetic copies of whatever seems to be blocking or activating cell receptors. The author 'discovered' the opiate receptor, activated by opiate drugs. Science is portrayed as a cut-throat world.

The author spends a lot of time explaining peptides and then mapping where they are in the body, surprise - it isn't always in the brain but throughout the body. Then a guilt trip over a lost Nobel Prize and rejection by the scientific establishment and loss of drug funding by 'the second biggest drug company in the world' jolts the author into a new way of life through meditation and massage therapy.

Two things I found valuable about this memoir- scientific proof that cancer is caused by toxins in the body (and not by repressing ones emotions), and second - drugs don't work, they just alter body chemistry for a while then wear off.

I thought this book might be over my head. But I was able to understand most of the scientific jargon-happily because, I think, Candace Pert wrote in a very understandable and possibly simplified way. I think she is genious.

I dog eared most of the last half of this book! It started slow for me with her personal story and trials, but became entirely more and more interesting. Many of my favorite health quotes are hers regarding depression and alternative help (of course.) I loved the "Prevention-oriented tips for healthful blissful living" she includes in Appendix A because they already rang true for me. I LOVE how this world-class neuroscientist backs up the principles of mind/body medicine!!

This information will change the way western medicine does waht they do. Our hospitals will resemble more health spas in 20 years! I went to hear her give a lecture and was thoroughly entertained and educated! And that was after reading this book.
