Jay McInerney. The name elicits both praise and dismay from the literary community. "Potential", such a troublesome word for either an artist or an athlete. The new Fitzgerld. The next Willie Mays. A difference between the two is that an athlete has a very limited career span and an artist, or in this case, specifically an author, has a lifetime. Bright Lights, Big City is now 22 years old. McInerney troubles are well documented and certainly the fodder of gossip columnists. Maybe one...

A 9 - 11 novel, not particulary good, revolving mostly around adulterous relationships. A fair amount of wading through wordy rhetoric to get to various good passages. "Russell was a mania about his dinner parties. He was capable of throwing a tantrum if Corrine added someone at the last minute. It was one of the few areas of life in which he was prissy. When he put on his chef/host hat, everything had to be just so. (9) These dinner parties were always preceded by Sturm und Drang--Corrine...
