This is a heartbreaking, haunting story about identity, loss, loneliness that will leave a lump in your throat. Moore's clever use of narrative structure dazzles. She breaks every rule, but she does it so well. The last pages of the book will bring goosebumps to the back of the neck.

Normally I love Lorrie Moore. But "Anagrams," though clever and well-written, is self-indulgent, whiny, and dreary. Kirkus Reviews wrote, a year after the book came out in 1985, that this novel "never takes off because it never transcends the entropy at its core." So true.

This is a pretty good book. As usual for Lorrie Moore, it is FULL of great observations, sadness, and similies that make you smile, laugh, and cry. But, at times I felt like the book was too amorphous . . .too adrift in quips and cleverness and lacking center.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was fresh and interesting. It is a collection of stories where the two main characters have the same names but somewhat different story lines in each story. I feel like I could re-read this book several times and still not understand all of its layers.
