“Horrifying story of an Austrian man who kidnapped his own 18 year old daughter and kept her captive in a dungeon he built in his basement for 24 years, fathering her 7 children. He released her in 2008 when her oldest daughter had a life threatening illness, and at that point the daughter was able to tell police what he had done to her and her children. 3 of the children had been imprisoned in the basement with her their entire lives; 3 other children were brought upstairs and raised by Mr. Fritzl and his wife.
The book is a quick read; I got through it in 3 or 4 hours; Mr. Glatt is no Ann Rule. He was compentent, but not riveting. I found myself skimming some portions that didn't seem to add to the story.”

“Never has there been a book in my short little life that I can truly say shocked the living hell out of me to a degree even I don't even recognize. It tells of the disturbing shocking true story of Josef Fritzel - a man of all evil and pure insanity. Raised as a boy near the death camps of the nazi war lead Josef leading a sick and twisted fantasy of a highly disturbed conscience. He marries to have 7 children whom he beats and abuses on every level. His one daughter in particular captures his interest and attention. So much, he begins and develops this sick twisted nature towards her. Going behind what any human is imagined capable, this man shows true psychopathic disturbances and chilling details of a life so badly bruised and stolen. The father imprisons a young daughter, goes beyond the disgrace of incest and holds in the palm of his hand the key to life and death to his daughter and his fathering of 7 other children within the tiny unknown spaces of a dungeon where he satisfied himself for 24 years. ”*~LiVe*LoVe~* wrote this review Friday, August 26, 2011. “The book title caught my interest - SECRETS IN THE CELLAR !
As I began to read it I could not put it down.
What amazes me is that none of the tenants that lived in their apartment block took notice of the noises coming from the cellar.
Also when he told people that the cellar is off limits or when the dog was sniffing around and barking that would of raised a red flag!
Why did no one take action !!!!
I"m disappointed that he was not caught earlier and that he put his daughter and all the young children through such a horrific ordeal.

He fathers 7 children with her and his wife is never aware since he claimed that the daughter had run off and joined a cult. ”Birdie wrote this review Sunday, April 17, 2011. “a horrifying real-life story that is as well-documented as can be without interviews of the victims, but boy was this book repetitive and poorly written. ”heidi w wrote this review Monday, January 10, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
