Ummm...wow. The psychic energy spent in proving the notion of infinity must have been something to behold. And DFW captures it in his somewhat-esoteric style.

An infinite topic + writer with infinite capacity for detail = mind-manglingly complex.

Also, the book promised that my mathlessness wouldn't impede comprehension; WRONG. Second half way over my head.

Not for everyone - but it does underscore the genius (and I'm not using that word in the common, trivialized sense; other writers refer to DFW as "the brain"). Although mainly an essayist and writer of fiction (Infinite Jest), DFW takes on the esoteric world of higher mathematics and specifically the problem of conceptualizing LARGE numbers, and infinity. What is commonly accepted as rote in your into calculus course in college actually turns on articles of faith, no more defensible than virgin births, resurrections of the dead, or reincarnation. If you are mathematically or philosophically inclined, nad you can concentrate long enough, you will find it uniquely interesting.
