Yes | No“Dulcie is the embodiment of a fleeting spirit that defines who she is: a determined, persevering teenage girl. As the world around her seems to collapse, she seems bent on wrenching it back into shape, even if that means driving alone across the country or leaving everything to go back to her "home". Throughout the story she learns what it means to be still and rest, to acknowledge that others can have it worse than she does, and to help others the way that her grandfather and father have done. The primary target of her helpfulness, Roxanne, is a senior who works as a janitor at the high school she attends. Dulcie befriends her, which gives her someone to talk to, to confide in. Their friendship grows and develops, and then.. well.. read it to see what happens to Dulcie, Roxanne, and the rest of the characters. ”

But unlike her mother, she doesn't want to move and definitely doesn't want to give up her dad's red truck. Especially since it's the only thing that remind Dulcie of her life back in Connecticut. One night she decides that she has had enough with California and that she was going back to Connecticut. Early in the morning she drives cross country, stopping to write postcards to her mom and grandpa in Connecticut.
After being back in Connecticut, shes already made a new friend Roxanne. She continues to do her job, which is to help the janitor out. The janitor happened to be her grandpa and her father also was a janitor at her high school which he had died while cleaning. After she moved away Roxanne took her job, and so now Dulcie works for free. Being in Connecticut, brings back memories of her and her dad and how everyone at the school enjoyed his company.
As she gets to know Roxanne more, she comes to realize that Roxanne's mom isn't exactly what Dulcie had pictured. Turns out that Roxanne's mom can be abusive and Dulcie's parents had known Roxanne's mom during school and knew that she wasn't the best person to get along with. Dulcie's dad also knew that Roxanne was having trouble at home with her mom. Then one night, Dulcie and Roxanne happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. It started when Dulcie's mom came to visit Dulcie and so Dulcie stayed behind with Roxanne to close up the school. After they closed up, Roxanne wanted to change before meeting Dulcie's mom. As they went to Roxanne's house, the music blasted so loud that the house shook. Dulcie had turned the music down which made Roxanne's mom upset and ended up hitting Dulcie. Roxanne ended up saving them both and explained everything to Dulcie's mom and grandpa. In the end, Roxanne moved with Dulcie's mom to California after Roxanne's mom had been arrested for abusing her child. Even though Dulcie feels jealous sometimes, she's still happy that she got to help Roxanne even though her father wasn't able to.
I thought Defining Dulcie was a good book. I would recommend it because it shows how moving away isn't always the solution. In a way, the book is predictable, but also it has unexpected moments. My favorite character would be Dulcie's Dad because even though he went to school and had an opportunity to be something else than a janitor, he still chose to become janitor despite what his wife said. He also enjoyed art even after he was passed on. ”
“Defining Dulcie
I really enjoyed this book. This book is about a girl that is a janitor. Her dad dies and about a month later her mom forces her to move. After they move her mom went to find a job but Dulcie doesn’t have anything to do. So she goes to the pool. Soon after her mother returns she tells her she wants to trade her husband’s truck inn for a car. But Dulcie says no she don’t want to get rid of her father’s truck. So one mourning her mother wakes up to find Dulcie and the truck gone. She finds out Dulcie ran away to live with her grandfather. Dulcie sends her mother a postcard everyday. One day her mother comes to see her in meets Dulcie’s friend she works with but before her mother leaves to go back to her home she takes Dulcie’s friend with her. I read this book about a month ago. It is a good suspense book. Everything in this book is interesting. I think everyone who reads it will love it.

The one part i didn't like was when she would cleean the school, in those parts it would get kind of boring. But I also liked when she made a friend that she could talk to and tell her feeling to. you love tis book, so go read it.Alexis C.”

In the story "Defining Dulcie" by Paul Acampoda, Dulcie had an amazing life and she didn't think anything could go wrong until the day that her dad died from a mixture of chemicals. Dulcie wasn't the happest of all people but she was survivng and her mother made the biggest descision without her. Her mom decided that it would be better for her and her daughter to move to California, so Dulcie packs her things and moves with he rmother but when she arrives her mother decides to sell ehr fathers truck. Dulcie wasn't to happy about this and decided to take her fathers truck, and drive back to Conneticut without her mother knowing. I personally think that Dulcie made the right deiscion driving back to Conneticut. If I was Dulcie I would have hated to have my mother make a deiscion to force me to move to another state and leave my grandparents, friends, and my hometown. ”
