Wow! Incredibly Vulgar and fantastic. I'm crude myself and this book makes me sound like Elmo. I can't believe it was written in the 30s, no wonder they violated the first amendment for 30 years.

I understand the the "tropics" are widely read, perhaps Miller's most popular works, but I recommend that fans of these try the fascinating and peculiar Sexus, Plexus, and Nexus, which I actually thought were more interesting.

Also - put a Henry Miller book in your car in case you get stuck at a traffic jam like an accident or closed bridge as they can be enjoyed anytime and opened and closed anywhere. Good reads.

i dont know if i like this one better than "cancer" because it is better or because after reading "cancer" i was just able to groove into miller's zone more easily & readily but i really enjoyed parts of this book so much! a great read & i come away from the pair of them certain that miller was a great influence upon kerouak... in a good way! & hell... im sure he is a strong influence on many writers since... so glad i finally read these...

A lot goes on in this writing, and I mean a whole lot. One topic to the next it was almost as if he were shoving it down the readers throat. Ranting and raving on his childhood adventures. I liked it.

although its considered a companion to tropic of cancer i found this to be a much deeper ride. the explorations into childhood memories is a marked difference and the philosophical rants are much more mature. i felt a little lost at the end but i think this was because i wished it would go on forever.

i love that at page 78 there is a chapter like break in the text with a large cap on the following page and then nothing similar for the remaining 270 pages.
