“I made it a few dozen pages in, but was put off by the way Chilton mixes imaginative narration with events that we have evidence to suggest may have happened. He couldn't decide on whether he wanted to write a book about the historical Jesus or a novel about Jesus as a character. I did appreciate the perspective of putting Jesus in his religious context as a Jew, and it's something we don't really see too often, but the leaps and bounds he took with the kind of person Jesus was and his life made me feel as if he was writing uninformed impressions down. The whole narrative quality didn't interest me at all, and I found it annoying; that's the basic reason I didn't want to attempt finishing this book; I was looking for something more about what evidence (scant though it may be) we have for what Jesus the man was like.”
