I bought it at Barnes and Noble, right as the store opened at 9am! I'm 15, and there was a 30-something-year-old man standing in line behind me, also buying a copy of the book! I felt so glad to be part of a multi-generational phenomenon like this! (Not quite as sweeping as Harry Potter, of course, but still significant)

I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it. I loved Hunger Games. I just felt disappointed... It seems more like this book is just a stepping stone to the third. Trilogies do that sometimes. The authors feel like they need three books and the middle one is always a transition. Something happens.... but it really don't mean that much. The third one will be good though... action packed like the first.

However, I really do think this book showed all the inter working of the uprisings. It showed that a revolution or change cannot happen without either force, or some sort of drastic measure. Of course it was somewhat of a stepping stone, but there was much to read in between the lines. (personal opinion)

IMHO, I think the book is a great progression of the story. To go from book 1 to book 3 without showing the gradual uprising would somehow not have the same feel for me. The threats from President Snow, the surprises during the tour, the announcement of the Quell, treatment of certain characters all make book 3 ripe for the uprising.

Wow!!! I love this series!!! I just finished the book this morning. I'm sad that it was left such a cliffhanger, but I'm just assuming that the next book will resolve the Katniss/Peeta/Gale thing well and believing Collins won't kill any of them off.

I thought the first two sections were slow. I don't like the first person writing. Sometimes it seemed like a "travel dialogue" where she wrote...this happened, then this, then we went here, then... I found that to be really boring. BUT, that being said, I like writers who take chances and it feels like this was a chance with Collins. Did she write in first person with Hunger Games? I lent my copy out so I don't remember.

Besides that, I LOVED everything else.

I have my own opinion on who Katniss should end up with. I think Peeta is her match. He's steady and smart and calm. Gale is too much like Katniss, hunter, driven by anger, strong. Not that Peeta isn't strong, just in a different way. I think Katniss and Peeta balance each other out so well. PLUS, we know that Katniss feels the spark that is so necessary in romantic relationships. The kissing scene was yummy. I always wish there was more of that for Katniss and Peeta. They deserve more happiness.

All this being said, we really don't know too much about the emotional makeup of Gale. He's really been left out of so much of both books. Who is he? Did he have a relationship with Madge? There's a slight hint of it in this book. It seems as if he'll have a bigger part in the third book, and I'm looking forward to understanding him better.

How long do we have to wait for the next book? UGH!!!! I'm glad we have this forum to keep me company and involved in the story while I wait!!

    posted 3 years ago.
    • Dani

      Dani

I believe that Seneca Crane was the Head Gamer in the Hunger Games, before Plutarch Heavensbee is promoted, I think he was executed for something that went wrong in the games but I cannot remember exactly why, although I think it was because they ended up with two winners. But I could be wrong. I wasn't really paying all that much attention to those kinds of details, I was reading fast too.

I am currently reading this book and am enjoying the themes presented by Ms. Collins. I wanted to start a discussion with a question. In the real world, how much oppression does a government need to commit before it justifies its citizens in committing violent opposition to that oppression? How do we know when it is time to act? I believe that the characters in Panema are certainly justified, however, for example would we need to rebel if our gov't was just lying to us (like with the last administration in the US). Would love to hear what others have to say about this topic.

    • Kristin S

      Kristin S

But look how long it took these people to rebel again after the last time they tried. There is that risk that they will lose so much more than they could gain.

And plus, this day in age, I just don't know that revolution is possible. Back at the first American Revolution, we had more of a chance. We were more evenly matched with our government. Now they have control of the military. And not everything can end as "happily" as V for Vendetta! :P

I don't really know the answer to your question. Mostly because I'm so pessimistic in that, I don't believe a revolution would work. I believe the citizens would lose out on much more that we are losing out on now. Lies will exist in government forever. That's just the way of it. It is sad but true. Revolution won't change that.

      posted 3 years ago.
    • Saint Francis de Sales

      Saint Francis de Sales

Well, in the American Revolution, at first, the colonies weren't supposed to stand a chance. People were expecting them to lose quickly. Even after they won, people expected their new government to collapse. And I think if there was a rebellion now, we could end up with something a lot worse. And I think it's true that lies will always be in the government, especially in large countries. That's just what happens when there's power.

Really? I thought this one was way more exciting than the first one. And I'm not sure district 12 is going to get better since it's been, well, destroyed to a point of nonexistance. Plus, it pretty much tells you in the book there's going to be another war.

haha, yeah I guess it was good at being a cliffhanger, but I don't really like cliffhangers. Every time I mention that to a friend, they're like "well, they just want you to read the next book." If I could, I would make a deal with every author who has written series that I read that I would read every single sequel if they make the endings less of a cliffhanger.

I found this book far more like a movie sequel than a second book in a series. Reading it, it felt like the author had intended Hunger Games to stand alone, but after its success she (or her publisher) decided to write a continuation. The plot was not only weak, but almost a bad version of the Hunger Games, as if the author couldn't come up with any new ideas so she had to throw the same events at us again. I adore The Hunger Games, but caution people not to read the sequel because, like with many movie sequels, Catching Fire partially ruined the original for me.

I agree that it was weaker, but it is the second of a trilogy. That is generally how it goes. I mean, Two Towers is definitely the weakest of the LOTR books. The second book just leads to the third. So, I definitely enjoyed this story as it carries us forward to the 3rd.

huh? That's interesting because I didn't feel that way at all. I never felt like the story was complete after I finished The Hunger Games. I always felt that Katniss had more to accomplish against the capitol! I, in fact thought the plot was amazing and the characters were much better in this one. I thought it was a dreadfully fantastic idea to bring back old tributes. I think everyone SHOULD read the sequel!

I liked the Hunger Games, but Catching Fire just didn't live up to my expectations. The evil dictator was the quintessential example of the super-villian who is evil for no reason. This guy even smells like blood and death. C'mon. I like some character development in my bad guys, even just a little would appease me... but none at all. I just couldn't get past it.

I'm glad Haymitch did what he did. Not mad but glad he did it. Katniss is brave, but not enough to bring the rebellion. On the other hand, Haymitch is smart AND reckless, Kanitss is only reckless and smart when she wants. I'm sad Gale and Katniss haven't had a chance to show their love to each other, but I think what Katniss feels for him is not more than what she feels for Prim. On the other hand Peeta has loved her, and never asked anything in return. Slowly Katniss will realize he's a keeper. Aug. 24 cannot come fast enough

I'm kinda mad at Haymitch, but at the same, he knew Katniss wanted a revolution, so he wasn't completely using her if he was doing something he though she'd approve of. I do think he should've told her, but I kinda get the reasons why he didn't. I think it's really sweet that Peeta loves Katniss so unconditionally, but I think he deserves someone who unhesitantly loves him back.

Ok so honestly while i don't agree with creating teams for these books i don't care of other people do. Anyway I do not think the Suzanne Collins would kill off Peeta. It would ruin things for some people. She may kill Gale off though. But (and don't jump on me for saying this) he wasn't really in the books alot. To me he seemed like a minor character even though he isn't. I think that Katniss will go deep into the Capitol to save Peeta and end up discovering all these dirty capitol secrets...maybe something like they plan to blow up the districts or whatever...and then she will gather up the people she cares about and take them to District 13 where they will start the rebellion. Does that seem quite possible to anyone else? Oh and also...on their journey to 13 a bunch of them will die because the Capitol will do what they did the the red-headed Avox girl...like capture her and stuff. Just saying.

I totally agree with you michelle g, except about the creating teams opinion. I think it's a fun way for fans to dispute the characters of books. And I can definitely say that I am Team Peeta.
Why on earth would Collins let Katniss end up with Gale? He is hardly in the books. Admittedly, he has been her best friend since childhood, but we, as the readers, didn't get a glimpse of any of that. If she planned on pairing them up, we would have seen a lot more of him.
And I have no doubt in my mind that there will be a rebellion with District 13.

I have to agree that in terms of actual action in the books, Gale hasn't been set us as that important of a character. We've had two books that he has hardly been in. Though, both of those books are set in a place Gale cannot be, the Games. If the books were set in District 12, he'd be a much bigger character. But, as it is, he is kinda this phantom care giver. A friend, but really, he takes care of his mom, takes care of Katniss, takes care of her family while she's away...he has no real purpose but to serve others. Which, is actually pretty noble, but doesn't make for all that interesting of a character.

Though, I kinda liked that there was this glimmer of him and the mayor's daughter....just sayin'.

Katniss is such an independent girl, I find Gale an interesting partner for her. Not in a romantic way, but as a literary device. Ultimately, they teamed up because two hunters are more productive than one, but it's such an interesting dynamic. Because neither of them really needs the other. But they are obviously drawn to each other. I guess just the birds of a feather thing? They both like that they are rebelling?

Yes! kristen c if the storys had been a bit more oriented around District 12 then i think it would be quite possible for Gale to end up with Katniss...but he became...quite cold around her. I don't fully understand Gale. First it's "I love you" and now it seems like he is trying to say "You don't love me..get out of my life..." and this leads me to think that either Gale is going to die and Katniss is going to realize she loved him...i think she loves him as more of a brother...OR Katniss is going to get hurt and Gale is going to be less cold. But the most simple way to end this (don't get upset with me for this) is to have Gale die and Peeta end up with Katniss...i wonder how they are going to hide the whole "baby" thing...

Ok, let me make this 100% clear, I do NOT think it is stupid that people have started Team Peeta and Team Gale. Of course people are going to take sides.

What is annoying to me is that the love triangle is all anyone wants to talk about. No one seems to want to talk about anything else. And these books have a lot of interesting topics.

That's it. If I hated being on "Teams' I'd hate myself because I too, have an opinion on who Katniss should end up with. But I'd rather discuss the more interesting things like what is in District 13 now? What are some of the secrets of District 1? What do you think of those disctrict 1 leaders who are on Katniss's side? Are there other people in District 1 that feel that way or is the thirst for bloody entertainment too strong for them to care about the humanity of the children they watch killing one another?

See? Way more going on here than some silly romance!

    Just saying.

I think that District 13 is going to be exactly what Suzanne Collins hinted it's going to be. She already got her readers riled up for it, she has to deliver.

Honestly, I hope there are "Games" in the last one. I'll be truthful here, the only thing that kept me reading was the excitement and suspense of the "Games". I guess without them, Collins could deliver an exciting last installment, but the trilogy IS called the Hunger Games.

This would never happen, but a Children vs. the Game Coordinators Game would be awesome. The children would slaughter them. That would almost be the "honorable" way to deal with this. Stick Katniss and Peeta in there against the District President (I forget real titles...) and have them fight to the death. Whoever wins, gets whatever they want. The President would get to keep things as they are, Katniss would get to free the other Districts from the tyranny of District 1.

To me the Capitol is going to release even more of their creations and Peacekeepers, forcing the people in the districts to fight. • David R

      David R

will Katniss can't be killed because the book is written in 1st person, and then means that Katniss is telling the story. She will not die because it is very hard for authors to switch the main character. If it was told by another person, then this would be a completely different story. I doubt that the author will take that chance.

After winning the Hunger Games in the previous novel, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, a poor sector in the fictional country of Panem. On the day that Katniss and Peeta are to start a "victory tour" of the country, she is visited by President Snow.

Katniss and Peeta, rich and famous from having won the annual Hunger Games, are reluctanly embarking on a Capitol-sponsored victory tour through the 12 districts of the dystopian world Panem. They are now seen as a threat to oppressive Capitol, having defied the Gamemakers with their subversive victory. This act of rebellion has ignited growing unrest within the districts. To her dismay, Katniss is looked upon as the leader of this uprising. Katniss briefly considers escaping with her family and friends before reluctantly assuming her role as rebel leader. The insidious President Snow is prepared to do whatever is necessary to quash this budding uprising.

Collins offers readers intriguing insights into the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and the spreading rebellion. The story is equally rich in provocative political and social commentary, and exploring epic themes of morality, obedience, oppression, rebellion, redemption, sacrifice and, of course, survival. The author also creates a tantalizing and unresolved love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale that will leave questioning readers desperate for the next installment. This novel can stand alone but readers will have a much a richer experience if they begin with The Hunger Games.

Katniss has to deal with threats to herself, her family, and, of course, Peeta and Gale, deal with entering into the hunger games again, with keeping up her 'in love with Peeta Mellark' act, and, mainly has to keep the rising rebellion a secret and to a minimum. Katniss is not the only one with an unfortunate happening, though...think about Peeta. We now can conclude that Peeta hasn't really been acting his love to Katniss- it's real. Even though his problems aren't nearly as dramatic as Katniss's, he still has to deal with the fact that she will really never love him, and she knows that she's prettymuch teasing him (which is so horrible for him:( ). I don't know why, but I still feel more sorry for Peeta.

She doesn't want to hurt him. In the third one, she kisses Gale and he told her he knew she was going to because she only kisses him when he's in pain. I think the same concept goes for Peeta. And also, she is slightly not pretending because she doesn't know what she feels. She has never felt an urge to like a boy until she was forced to in the hunger games. I hope that helps?

Because that's how the author chose to write it. You need to preheat the oven before you stick it in the oven. And yes read the third one. As the Victory tour comes to an end, District 11 is next. Near the end of Katniss and Peeta's visit to District 11, she forgets her flowers on stage. this causes her to see a very disturbing event. An older man killed in front of everyone because he showed an act of rebellion. This is getting good right away, what is going to happen next?
Katniss joins the uprising because Gale decides to run it for District 12. Gale is putting himself in danger by doing this. Katniss is showing her love for Gale by doing this. Wait she is suppose to be in love with Peeta isn't she?
The Reaping of the Quarter Quell is the final main event. The Quarter Quell always has a twist in it, this time it seems like it was especially designed for Katniss. This year all of the wining tributes are in the reaping. Since Katniss is the only winning girl tribute in district 12 she must go back in the games. This means more turmoil.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved it for the action and rebellion. This book was two steps up from the first book. All in all a very well done job. 5 stars for this book.

Really? I couldn't put the first book down. How far along are you? Maybe if you stick around to the actual games part of the story you will start to like it more. I know that is the part I liked best. Sorry if that wasn't a very good pep talk. At least if you finish the first one and still hate it you can give up on the rest of the series and know that you really tried.

    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man they say murdered three.
    Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee.
    Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run so we’d both be free.
    Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me.
    Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

I just started this read... I really like it so far...

Before I read the Hunger Games- I wasn't sure if it was something I would like or whether it would be another Hollywood hyped-up book. I was pleasantly suprised by how good the story was. I am sure you thought the same if you read the first book. I would recommend reading it- this author has an originality that I haven't seen in ages. Good luck!

Read the book, it is amazing and has a great ending that almost forces you to read the next book. Suzanne Collins is an amazing author. I haven't known of an author this amazing in years. Hope you enjoy

After her Hunger Games victory, Katniss is back with her family and friends in District 12, but word gets around that her and Peeta unknowingly helped cause an unrest in the country of Panem. Suddenly, making people believe Peeta and her and in love is top priority, or else President Snow will step in. But, Katniss is thrown into all too familiar situations and getting Peeta out alive is her only mission, even if others have something else planned.

Katniss is so empowering. I love her thoughts and feelings. I also liked the pull towards Gale and Peeta in Catching Fire. Katniss likes them both, but is emotionally confused and I feel as though it was a bit easier to connect with her, more on an emotional level. Haymitch is still as serious, yet goofy as ever…which is awesome! I really enjoyed the new characters introduced and I couldn’t wait to learn more about them. Each district’s lifestyle is so different that it was really great learning about them, however unfortunate their circumstances were.
