This is the best book on Buddhism of any sort I have read to date. It shows its age in long chapters that do not lend themselves to sound bite readings. And that is a good thing. It lays out arguments and histories in a way that lets you connect the dots intellectually while absorbing the more subtle points. It has some flaws, namely being repetitive at times, and end with a weak discussion of Zen in art that could have use more robust discussion and more varied examples. But I do feel more in tune with Buddhism, particularly the philosophy of Zen (if not the modern practice). This is a must read for any serious student of Bhuddism.

I am a huge fan of Alan Watts, more specifically, of his recorded lectures and I was disappointed to discover that this audio was not a full lecture on The Way of Zen by Alan Watts, but readings taken from the book with a few minutes of Alan's recorded lectures throughout. Still good material anyhow, and worth the listen :)

A superior introductory text that introduces Zen to Western readers in a way that only Alan Watts can.

A spritual classic written with historical perspective on hinduism, budhism, tao, zen. Author is erudite, enlightened and playful, witty at the same time.
