While the subject matter is often gritty and raw, the writing is beautiful and poetic. I sometimes had to just stop and admire the author's use of words even as the plot propelled me forward. Some of the characters and sections of the book were not quite as interesting to me as others but overall an amazing novel. I had read his previous books Zoli and dancer and liked them as well and will look for his other books.

Really a great story told from multiple viewpoints with a narrative that comprises both generational divides, cultural divides and linear divides of decades. I was familiar with McCann by reputation and am excited to dig deeper into his bibliography.

I highly recommend it AND suggest you find yours at your favorite local independent bookseller. Mine are Bailey Coy and Elliott Bay Books.

I loved this book however, I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and would have liked a few more details. Otherwise, the characters were excellent and the storyline fascinating.

So this reminded me of Await Your Reply in that the stories end up connecting; although a bit more predictable. And honestly, the characters did not stay with me as long. Though, as always, they Irish brothers

Let The Great World Spin is not a pretty story, but Colum McCann writes so beautifully that you are immediately drawn into this book. The characters are tragic, but you’ll care for all of them. This book is a unique read. It is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time.

I own very few works of fiction except for some of the classics and books from my younger days. But this is a book I would consider adding to my shelf.
And I'm not sure why; it isn't great literature, nor is the plot line that compelling to me.
But after reading it and before I had to return it to the library, I found I could pick it up and open it to any page and read for a bit.
I'll give this some more thought.

I am between 3 and 4 stars on this one. The story starts out with the famous tight rope walk between the twin towers in the 1970's by a daring Frenchman. Then each chapter is told from the POV of of about 5 different characters whose connection becomes apparent as the book goes on. It starts off feeling like it's really the story that matters but then the message becomes clear.
