Even though Zack seems to have it all (he is engaged to a beautiful woman from a blue-blood New York family, he lives rent-free in his wealthy friend’s Manhattan brownstone), he can’t shake this nagging feeling that “all” is not what is going to make him happy. For one thing, he hates his job as a “middleman” for a large manufacturing corporation. And he is having trouble getting over his best friend’s death in a car crash two years ago. And he has a lot of confusing feelings about his friend’s widow, feelings that feel like a very strong attraction. Did I mention that his engagement party, given by his very wealthy future in-laws in their penthouse apartment, is on Saturday?

Into this mix comes Zack’s dad, Norm, who abandoned Zack and his two brothers in their childhood, now showing up on Zack’s doorstep wanting to make amends and be a real father again. Did I mention that Norm is an embarrassing mix of a lech, a narcissist, and a pathological liar?

Every time I explain this story to someone it comes off as the male version of “chic lit,” and I can’t emphasize enough that it is SO much more than that. I liked this book so much that I had trouble sleeping the night I finished it, couldn’t stop thinking about it the whole next day, and told everyone I could about it. The characters are so real and well-written, and the story manages to be hilarious and extremely touching at the same time. Have you every fallen in love with the characters in a book in such a way that you didn’t want it to end? That you want to see a sequel some day?

That’s how I feel about this book.

Read in 2 days, very easy, light read. I liked it. Laugh out loud funny in many chapters

Although I didn't like it as much as The Book of Joe, the author did a nice job at creating likable characters. It had a great pace and the end had a turn that the reader wasn't looking out for, which was a pleasant surprise.

I have loved all his books, he has a wonderful funny turn of phrase and deals with grief in such a moving but comic way.

Zach has everything: A job (even though he hates it) and is engaged to a beautiful woman who loves him madly. His estranged father shows up on his doorstep after an absence of 20 years and this event turns Zack's world inside out and upside down. A very enjoyable read. I absolutely love Jonathan Tropper's writing style and the story is just wonderful. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading this book about a man going through a crisis. The main characters ring true and it does have a happy ending.

I read "Everything Changes," and, immediately upon finishing it, went to the bookstore to pick up "The Book of Joe." This has a little bit of everything--family drama, coming-of-age, funny situations, heartbreaking situations.... and it is all packaged in a compelling way by an excellent writer. Love him!! Read this--then move on to "Joe"--and drop me a line to let me know what you think!
