This is a depressing novel. But it's a beautiful sort of depressing. Thomas is a master at creating a mood, and he made me feel the indifference, pain, and despair of his unnamed narrator. I was impressed with how intimate this story felt even though so much was left unsaid and uncertain. The writing is intricate, but sometimes borders on being too forced-artsy. Overall an excellent yet painful read.
