The Source: A Novel

by James A. Michener

All I can really say about this book is "wow." It's a fascinating look at the most amazing parts of history, told as they really happened instead of the glamorized version one often hears. I can't wait to start in on his other works.

The Source is not only a compelling history of the Holy Land and its people but a richly written saga that encompasses the development of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world. Although it is fiction, it is greatly researched and Michener does a great job of telling a story.

I read this many years ago and it remains a favorite. I never reread books since I always have so many on my "To be read" list but, if I ever do, this will be the one. I learned so much about archeology, civilization, and judiasm. Marvelously researched and a great read.

Whew. That was how I felt when I finished it. I was exhausted. A long book but worth the read.

Whew! I started this back in college...oh so long ago...but it was a library book and it had to be returned before I could finish it.....I hope I can finish it before its time to return it this time around. It is a captivating read, though it gets a bit slow in the middle. Still, the opinions of the three experts of the three monotheistic relegions are interesting to note.

A great history of Israel. It got a little bored in the middle. It answers the question, "So what's the big deal w/ idolatry?"

Good historical novel. Long, but what Michener book isn't? Describes an area of Galilee from cave men to modern times (published in 1964). Interesting treatment of the Jewish faith, plus all the cultures that have occupied the area. Not always easy to tell history from fiction, but the history is well researched and fascinating.

I read this years ago and absolutely loved it. It's a book you can completely immerse yourself in, well worth reading more than once.

Typical Michener - exhaustively researched. It took me a long time to slog through it, but it was worth it.
