The attention to detail in so many different eras makes this collection of stories about Tell Makor is remarkable. Time very well spent, reading this book. ”

I bought nearly a hundred copies of this book in used book stores to use in my world history classes.”

I have picked up this book three times previously and never finished it. I guess the fourth time's a charm! Actually, I mostly thank Don K. who read along with me and helped provide some historical background that improved the reading for me this go around.
Also, interestingly, in the past five or so years I think I've honed in more on my own religious beliefs or lack thereof, and this book talks a lot about religious belief and the conflicts that can arise from belief.
In the end, I felt that the author deserves huge kudos for the breadth and depth of this book. Michener's MO is a very lengthy, very accurate historical fiction, but one that uses fascinating stories to serve up its history. The history of Israel is more complex than most, hence I think this book was a little tougher to read. I had to pay attention. In this book, Michener uses and archeological dig to provide a frame for the book. As the archeologists unearth their finds in the various layers of earth, so we learn about the historical periods that accompany them. It works, but I did find that the actual modern day characters (the archeologists) were some of the least well developed even though we spent the most time with them.
But this time, I really enjoyed the journey as Michener brought me from the caveman days of Palestine to Israel of the 1960's. His vignettes are so powerful, and he doesn't shy away from the violence of the period. In the end, he ties things up nicely and mostly to my satisfaction.
All in all, very educational and instructive and well - - EPIC!!”
“I like Michener because of the historical work he puts into his books. I have visited Israel and archelogical digs and tells, am a student of that place and time, and this just gave me more information about it”

It took me a year and a half to read this, digesting it slowly as I went.......what an incredible book. I've never read anything quite like it, and wouldn't have expected to even enjoy such a book, but it has literally caused a paradigm shift in my perspective of what it means to be person of jewish faith, race, and tradition. Amazing!”
