Finally I got to read this book. And what fun it was. Moore came up with some great ideas for how Jesus Christ's live could have developed until his 30th birthday. I liked his style but sometimes my mind wandered away, because the story became too much like a tale.

I think Jesus would have been thankful for a friend like Biff. He is protective, loyal and inventive. I liked Biff very much. But of Jesus I had a good opinion too, he was the genie, his head always a little bit in the clouds and naive because he only saw the good things in every human being.

I'm definetily going to read more Moore.

Josh and Biff are best friends. Josh is the Son of God, and Biff is the bad crowd he falls in with. They set out on a journey to visit the three wise men so that Josh can learn to be the Savior. They encounter demons, yetis, buddhists, and the keys to great sex along the way.
I don't really know where to start. I adored this book and everything about it. Biff, is the most brilliant character I have ever read. Ever devoted and loyal as he is, Biff exposes himself to numerous sins so that he may explain what sin feels like to Josh. He invents sarcasm. He has a crush on the Virgin Mary and falls in love with Mary Magdalene. He admits to being quite angry that his existence has been whited out from the other gospels. He seems to be much more suited for our world than he was for his own. He's a rebel with a cause, and that cause is salvation for all mankind.
I also love the banter between Josh and Biff. The combination of modern slang with religious phrases is hysterical. In the end, you forget that the story already has an ending. In the end, I found myself hoping that Josh, Biff and Maggie would live happily ever after together. Somehow Moore makes you forget you are reading about Jesus. Not having the slighest bit of religious background, myself, I found it easy to get lost in the story of Josh and Biff. In fact, I found some of Moore's insights to be quite compelling. He weaves in other beliefs and religions with Christianity. This almost made sense to me. If Christopher Moore started a religion based on this book, I would almost certainly join. I know that the assumption is that anyone with a strong religious background would be wholly offended by this book, but why? What exactly is offensive about the story? I feel like the beauty of Biff is that he allows Josh to remain unsullied. Biff is the reason Josh can become the Messiah. He knows all about sin and human error, yet never has to partake in it himself.

I was surprised when I wasn't struck by lightning after reading it. Even more surprised that Christopher Moore wasn't either.

original take on biblical history. It was semi-respectful of telling the unknown story of Jesus the awkward years without being preachy or completely disrespectful. Funny light story.

Put aside your belief systems and read this book. Human, humane, and humorous.
