    Fantastic except when it's lame

Moore follows the story of Jesus's least-known disciple, Biff. Biff's gospel tells the story of Jesus' childhood and coming of age. Those parts that take place in and around the Holy Land, and among familiar characters are hysterical. The writing is smart, the humor is from insight into personalities and the "back story" of events reported in the (better-known) gospels.

If Moore had limited himself to these areas, this might have been one of the funniest books I've ever read. Unfortunately, he veers into a silly side track into Asia that lacks the charm of the beginning and end of the book. I'm glad I didn't give up, because the end was as good as the beginning; but it was a chore to slog through the middle. I loaned my copy to a friend, and she found the mid-section so annoying that she returned it withough having finished it.

I would recommend this book because the good parts were so good, but be prepared to come across some really bad chapters.

    New Christopher Moore Fan

Lamb was the first book that I have read by Christopher Moore. I couldn't put it down, Biff is the BEST fictional character I have read in a long time. His take on life is refreshing and too funny. My favorite part is when Josh and Biff are off in the world trying to figure out who Josh is supposed to be. This is the perfect book to read if you need some cheering up or even just a really good laugh. One chapter is enough to brighten you day. ;o)

You Haven't a Prayer In Keeping A Straight Face

Mr. Moore states it very well in his afterword, "If one's faith can be shaken by stories in a humorous novel, one may have a bit more praying to do." I believe there are two reasons the book is so popular and funny. #1: The book creates farce in an area (religion) that makes many people uncomfortable. There's the I-can't-believe-the-author-wrote-that reaction to some of Mr. Moore's material. Because he's writing about Jesus and the clan, some readers will bust out laughing and others will be deeply offended. Even if you are not religiously inclined, there's plenty of absurd, off-color material between its covers to tick off more sensitive souls. And reason #2: the guy has a very quirky, creative sense of humor. It's rare for a book to cause me to burst out laughing so often. Take it for what it is, a funny work of fiction. And to anyone who believes this lighthearted novel should be shunned, it's your loss.

    Dont' bother with this book

The book started out pretty clever, but about 3-4 chapters in, it just became vulgar. I actually bought 4 copies for friends and then returned them, as I could not give them to my friends to read since it was so raunchy. Don't bother with this book.
