Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

by Christopher Moore

While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely... (read more)

This book is very funny if you take it from a lighthearted point of view. If you try to read it as a serious depiction of Jesus, you'll be horrified! I laughed out loud several times, but did feel a little guilty for reading such a mockery of Our Lord!

I thought the story had great potential and I looked forward to reading it. In the end, however, I found there were a bit too many fart and sex jokes and the ending left something to be desired. The first half was, for some reason, much longer than the second half, leading the second half to feel a bit rushed, especially Joshua and Biff's journey to India. The running joke about Biff having invented practically everything from sarcasm to the theory of gravity and "Jew-do" got old quickly....

Clever, well written, and not entirely imaginary (I smell references to the Apochrypha, which, having been a religion major, I should have read 40 years ago). It's a great romp. Lots of laughs with a layer of seriousness, too.

The best Chrismas gift I ever bought myself-- funny and irreverent. It reminds us all that life shouldn't be taken so seriously. Laughter is truly divine, as Moore so eloquently wrote.

I just got this book yesterday from a colleague. I read one page of Chapter 1 before lunch. After I stopped laughing enough to talk again, I almost opted out of our lunch plans to read. Instead, she came by later in the afternoon for a break and asked me to read something funny to her. Nice to share a laugh during the work day! This book - what I've read of it so far - is a riot.
