While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely blasphemy to some, but to others it's a coming-of-age story of the highest order.
Joshua (a.k.a. Jesus) knows he is unique and quite alone in his calling, but what exactly does his Father want of him? Taking liberties with ancient history, Moore works up an adventure tale as Biff and Joshua seek out the three wise men so that Joshua can better understand what he is supposed to do as Messiah. Biff, a capable sinner, tags along and gives Joshua ample opportunities to know the failings and weaknesses of being truly human. With a wit similar to Douglas Adams, Moore pulls no punches: a young... see complete book description

If this book is your introduction to Moore, then pick up THE STUPIDEST ANGEL or PRACTICAL DEMONKEEPING next. You'll meet some old friends.

Clever, well written, and not entirely imaginary (I smell references to the Apochrypha, which, having been a religion major, I should have read 40 years ago). It's a great romp. Lots of laughs with a layer of seriousness, too.

The best Chrismas gift I ever bought myself-- funny and irreverent. It reminds us all that life shouldn't be taken so seriously. Laughter is truly divine, as Moore so eloquently wrote.

I just got this book yesterday from a colleague. I read one page of Chapter 1 before lunch. After I stopped laughing enough to talk again, I almost opted out of our lunch plans to read. Instead, she came by later in the afternoon for a break and asked me to read something funny to her. Nice to share a laugh during the work day! This book - what I've read of it so far - is a riot.

I loved this book, it made me bust a gut just about every page, or at least snicker madly. The first of Moore's books that I've read, and he has me hooked. However, I was struck by it's human depth, and the moments of pathos, sorrow, and compassion that balanced the humor, and enriched the story. I especially loved the exchanges between Raziel and Biff when they were in the hotel room together. Biff makes a wonderful, and suprisingly, sympathetic, likeable, narrator that clearly speaks with great affection of his best pal the Messiah. I highly recommend it to anyone, Christian or not. This made me a fan of Moore's, and I've been on a mission to track down all his other titles. He's a very talented writer, and I can honestly say Lamb is one of the best books I've ever read.
