She's Come Undone (Oprah's Book Club)

by Wally Lamb

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? I read this book, his first, after I read I Know This Much Is True. I loved that one and looked forward to reading more by Lamb. While I enjoyed this book, it did not hold my interest or attention nearly so much as I Know This Much Is True. The title character, while a tragic figure, was not very likeable and I found it hard to have much empathy for her. The ending did somewhat please me although if I had read this book first, I'm not sure I would have tried anything else by Lamb. I highly recommend his second book and would try anything else he writes.
Great, but dark, read...

It's hard to believe a coming of age character as real as Dolores Price was created by a man. I also feel as if Lamb captured the time periods Dolores lived through quite well. My only complaint is that he left a few of the supporting characters' stories unfinished, but I suppose that is why they are supporting characters instead of main ones.

Overall, this was a great, though dark, read and a book that I kept coming back to anytime I had a spare moment. Don't expect a Hollywood happy ending and you won't be disapointed with this book.
Solid Read

This was simply a great book. The story was unique and interesting and the author did a good job making me loathe, then pity, then cheer for the heroine. I really enjoyed this one!

From the beginning, the main character is smacked in the face with very harsh circumstances. While struggling to find herself, she endures endless bad luck and bad people. There are weird concepts in this book, but all are presented as a means to an end. Once you get to know the character, you almost become her, wishing and hoping like she is for a life that makes sense and includes happiness. A GREAT READ! There are no magic tricks to keep you interested - just the extraordinary writing talent of Lamb that draws you in and keeps you there until the very end!
EXCELLENT

I could go on for days about this book. I feel like Wally Lamb reached inside me and pulled all of my pain and struggles out. This book was simply amazing. I cant wait to read his other titles.
