Remarkable book!

But things I never saw coming....wow... In carefully measured prose, Umghar painted a world (I've never visited) so real & true that I feel like I'd been there & could empathize with the characters.

Worst ending of a book ever - SPOILER ALERT - unless it was her suicide.

It's a little gem of a book simply because the writing is stellar, the characters are pure & true, and the story is one that haunts long after you finish the last page.

A little slow, very sad. Another story about class, oppression of women, etc. Great writing, however, which kept me reading.

Great book about the difference between cultures and how the wealthy treat their help...makes you think.

The main character had no money or self-esteem...typical of the social class she was in. I was upset how the upper class treated the lower class so poorly and didn't even realize how terrible their lives were.

Excellent story about the intersecting worlds of a middle-class Bombay woman and her servant, each playing an enormous role in each other's lives for decades. I couldn't put down this well-written book.

Some aspects of this book interested me, but I never felt compelled to read it and felt like this big event happened at the end and then the author just wrapped it up too quickly in a way that didn't feel satisfactory. So overall disappointing.

I absolutely love this book. I got it for free in grand central terminal. Once I opened it I couldn't close it. It was definitely an unexpected pleasure being that I'm a big fan of thriller. This was far from a thriller, but but a great emotional roller coaster to say the least.

Interesting story about how two families live and work together. She does a good job of showing the good and bad of both groups. I enjoyed learning more about the Indian culture.
