I used to teach this novel to 9th graders. Joanne Greenberg also writes as Hannah Green, and this is an autobiographical novel about a girl who cuts and burns herself, and hears voices. Over her time in a mental hospital she learns the roots of her illness and gradually learns to live It might be good to pair with Girl Interrupted.
