    What an amazing series of translations of a most beloved poet. I knew about Coleman Barks from his work at Mythic Journeys, and now I get his passion for this series of poems. They are unlike anything I've ever read. I plan to read and re-read for many years to come.

    There is no poetry to compare to Rumi's. It will quite simply take the top of your head off. I can't recommend this collection highly enough.

    The Essential Rumi is an excellent read for those of us yearning to satisfy the "mystic" in us. Maulana Jelalludin Rumi was arguably the greatest mystic and Sufi of all time, the embodiment of the human journey towards the divine. The selections contained herein are derived from the Masnavi, the focal point and grand source of Rumi's wisdom, which covered everything from cultivating patience to not opening up a shop before the master teaches us the craft, perfect in today's fast-paced, instant gratification I-want-it-now society. Start with "The Tavern" and unite with the divine..

    It's been ages since I read this but i still remember one; it went something like:
    "The craftsman pulled a reed from the reedbed;
    cut holes in it and called it a human.
    Since then, it's been wailing a tender agony of parting;
    never mentioning the skill that gave it life as a flute."

    Beautiful translations!!

    Soul receives from soul that knowledge, therefore not by book

    nor from tongue.

    If knowledge of mysteries come after emptiness of mind, that is

    illumination of heart. Rumi.

    Rumi is an enlightened poet. Meaning you either get his ecstatic view of the universe or you don't. I see him as a breathe of fresh air and I reminder to expand my perspective.

    Hint...to turn on an intelligent woman, follow this recipe:
    1-FLOWERS, FLOWERS, FLOWERS
    2-candlelight
    3-this book. Bonus points if you read the book to her while she is soaking in a relaxing bubble bath.
