“This book, which flies back and forth from 1990s Massachusetts to 1690s Salem, is about a grad student who stumbles upon a spell book written by a Salem witch. This mystery is part historical fiction, part mystery, and I truly enjoyed it. ”Joyce R wrote this review Sunday, June 21, 2009. ( reply | view 1 replies | permalink ) Was this review helpful? “Katherine Howe wrote a solid story from a historian's perspective. She offers insight into the everyday culture and times of Mass. in the mid-1600's at it's most shameful time. It's a love story at it's very heart as told through the varied relationships w/in the story: generational mothers/daughters, communal/witch trails, professior/student, and man/woman.
It was also a good intro tutorial into research techniques.
Sometimes predictible but still solid enough to be a very good read. ”
“Howe was a bit wordy for my taste. She had a habit of describing everything, all at once, instead of weaving the details into the story. A lot of the plot elements were VERY obvious and it made the story very predictable. On the whole, however, an ok read and I think that many of my problems with Howe's style will be worked out as she writes more.”Lindsey H wrote this review Wednesday, June 17, 2009. “Clearly and interesting book about witches old and present. I was not disappointed by choosing another Barnes and Noble recommends book. Set in Marblehead, Ma, the story unfolds as Connie a graduate student moves into her grandmother's house for the summer with the intention of getting it ready for sale. Discovering a key, and not in the family Bible begins the journey that to some degree becomes very predictable. However, predictable it was I very much enjoyed the read and would recommend it.”Rosanne S wrote this review Wednesday, June 17, 2009. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“I love this book. It was very good. I want to read more of this author's work. She know how to write. Katherine is a very good writer. She can write different times with a very smooth transition. I highly recommend this book.
“I absolutely loved this book! It had all of my favorite things: a little romance, a little magic and historical fiction. This was a wonderful debut. It reminded me a little of The Book of Unholy Mischief: A Novel by Elle Newmark. I finished this one in a day.”MaryinHB wrote this review Tuesday, May 26, 2009. “This is a story about a grad student working on her PhD dissertation. Her mother convinces her to work on cleaning up an old house of her grandmothers and while doing that she finds a link to the past and Deliverance Dane. There is strange things happening and the story moves along nicely. I found that I was really interested in the authors own connection to two women in the 1600's that were hung as witches. ”krisT J wrote this review Wednesday, April 29, 2009.
