Make no mistake. This is a romance novel and not a fantasy work. I was able to enjoy the book for the excellent period flavour and rich detail, as well the down-to-earth characters and their self-deprecating humour. It's a 3.5 stars for me.

Decent romance with magic included - very fun to read. I ended up reading the other guardian books in this series.

She agrees to try a risky procedure, but only if he'll agree to marry her. He has to marry somebody, and if she can't heal him, he'll die, so he agrees. The rest is what happens after—nice marriage of convenience story with the added complication of magic.

When I was reading ten romances a week, they were all Regency romances, so the time period of this romance-with-magic is right up my alley. More romance than fantasy, but the magical elements are well-integrated with the historical setting and the class structure of the time.
