“Moore is a wordsmith extraordinaire. This is her first novel in over 10 years. It focuses on a Midwest college student, Tassie Keltjin, who enters college just after 9/11 with a burning desire to know everything. She is the daughter of a gentleman farmer whose potatoes are known throughout the Midwest. After the first semester Tassie gets a job as a part time nanny for a family who adopts a bi-racial child. Tassie, who didn’t care much for children one way or the other, comes to love the little girl. As the 6 month probation period before the adoption can become final comes around, Social Services learns of a horrible incident in the familys life several years before. With this discovery Tassies life feels disconnected and aimless. She goes home only to find her brother leaving for the war. Life becomes even more disjointed when he is killed. It is hard to describe this novel -- it is funny, it is devastating and every once in a while horrifying. Her use of language is amazing.
