“Said simply, its awesome. Mack relates military stratagies and techniques to our everyday lives, and gives us stratagies to improve ourselves in whichever ways we should improve. Since nobody's perfect, everbody should read this book; however, its an extra special treat for those of us who are already sheepdogs and understand the talking points.”

It's a great kick in the ass that sometimes we need to get us going in the right direction. I really love it and will use it consistently to keep myself in check and focused. There are simple and effective exercises to help a person assess their goals to make sure that they are pursuing the correct goals, followed by other great exercises towards achieving these goals. I believe anyone who is really interested in becoming the best they can be will benefit from reading and applying the mindset on a warrior. Kick out the sissy, weak, procrastinating, little whiner in you and let in the champion warrior in all of us that stops at nothing to achieve everything. I love it. ”

Most motivational books try way too hard to the point where you wonder if the author is trying to convince not just you but himself. Unleash The Warrior Within is not one of those books.
Taking cues from Sun Tzu's Art of War, Machowicz applies techniques of war to situations in life. Like most military professionals he quickly gets to the brass tacks of things. A few of the methods might be hard to remember, so just taking a few notes on your bookmark is recommended..you won't need pages of notes, one piece of paper or a bookmark is sufficient. Machowicz doesn't over-analyze problems ("analysis paralysis" as he calls it) but approaches them in an efficient manner. While simple, many of his observations are poignant. Very little in the way of psychobabble, just authentic beliefs and coping techniques written in a direct and passionate manner. I'd like to have an audio book version from the author. This book's a keeper and I see myself coming back to it again and again.”
“This book may look thin, but it definitely packs a punch.
Written by a former navy SEAL and creator of the martial art "Bukido", "Unleash the Warrior Within" has slowly become one of my favorite inspirational books.
Although I've known about the physical superiority of the members of the navy SEAL team throughout most of my life, I never was truly aware of the immense amount of mental training and strategies that these soldiers are taught through their time in the squad.
Truth is, these guys can not only kick your butt with a hand tied behind their back, but they probably can beat you in a game of chess too...
According to the author, beating an opponent involves the same amount of mental discipline and focus that reaching a goal takes, thus, the same techniques used in combat can be used in order to defeat most obstacles in life and get what you want.
They can be extremely useful, especially when it comes to goal-setting and strategic planning.
In the book, Mr. Machowicz not only shares extremely powerful vignettes of his time while in the SEAL team (the chapter about Hell Week was so inspiring and humbling, I still read it whenever I need a pick-me-up) but he also gives you enough techniques to help you deal with most of life's situations.
What I like best about the techniques in the book is that 1) they're extremely practical and 2) they are easy to remember and apply.
You have to understand--most of the techniques are meant to be used in really stressful situations, so they have to be both, effective and efficient.
For example, Machowicz' "VCR's" technique is something I was able to use the minute I read about it.
What is a VCR, you're probably wondering?
A VCR (Verbal Command Request) is sort of a mixture between an affirmation and a verbal command/self-talk statement.
Machowicz explains the importance of self-talk while dealing with a stressful situation and how giving yourself short verbal commands while the event is taking place can mean the difference between life and death (this is done mentally, of course).
My favorite VCR from the book is "Not Dead Yet--Can't Quit."
That has to be one of the most powerful phrases I've heard in my life, especially when seen within the context of the story (it got him through Hell Week).
I have it taped to my computer screen.
Another simple, yet effective technique is the C.A.R.V.E.R. analysis. This technique helps you find out which objectives truly matters--something that can come in really handy when doing strategic planning.
The writing style is simple, yet powerful. It's easy to get into the stories, as Mr. Machowicz has a knack of putting you in the action.
Although the book is pretty short, the only thing I did not enjoy from it was the lack of variety of the stories in it.
Even though they are well organized and "fit in to place", after a while, some of the stories were too drawn out to the point of feeling like filler.
Then again, if you're into the theme you'd probably not care about them (reading about his skiing experience for the 30th time sort of got old after a while).
I also understand that the writer probably is not allowed to share most of the "meaty" stuff due to its confidential nature; most of the stories have to do with his training and not his actual combat action.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book.
It's not only a short read, but it's also packed with field-tested information that can definitely help you reach any goal you want.
Best of all, you don't have to go through BUD/S Hell Week to get to it.
