The Wide Window is about three orphans named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are very nice children, but their lives are very unfortunate and are filled with sadness and bad luck. Their story in this book is very sad, just like all of the others.

In this book, the Baudelaires go to another place in order to find a new guardian. They meet their new guardian – Aunt Josephine – who lives at Lake Lachrymose. The children are happy living with Aunt Josephine, but they soon stumble across Count Olaf again. Count Olaf is an evil man who is trying to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. Count Olaf disguises himself as a captain (Captain Sham) and pretends to be nice to Aunt Josephine. Aunt Josephine actually buys the act and invites him to dinner. While the children were in their room trying to figure out a plan to convince Aunt Josephine that Captain Sham is really Count Olaf, they heard a loud crash coming from inside the house. When they went inside the library, they saw that the big window was shattered into pieces. Aunt Josephine gave them a clue of where Olaf had hidden her. The children stole a sailboat and went to Curdled Cave to save her. They were on their way back to shore with Aunt Josephine, when the hungry Lachrymose Leeches started swimming towards them. Violet created a distress signal before they get eaten, but unfortunately the person who saw it was Captain Sham. He sailed toward them and pulled the Baudelaires on board his other sailboat, but he pushed Aunt Josephine in the lake to be eaten by the Lachrymose Leeches. In the end, the Baudelaires spoiled Olaf’s evil schemes, but he escaped. Now they have to find another guardian.

Memorable Quote:
"I'm not sure that "The Baudelaires had each other" was the moral of this story, but to the three siblings it was enough. To have each other in the midst of their unfortunate lives felt like having a sailboat in the middle of a hurricane, and to the Baudelaire orphans this felt very fortunate indeed." (Lemony Snicket, Page 214)

Setting/Important Places:
*Damocles Dock
*Lake Lachrymose
