It's noticeably dated some 30 years after it's first appearance, but as a mystery, it still holds up well. I particularly enjoyed the retro glimpse into how newspapers used to put out a paper, as it was the way it was done when I first started working at a newspaper 25 years ago.

If this book hadn't been by Harris I would not have finished it. Definitely not woth a lot of time. However, I did finish it and the twist of who did it was neat. It just was a long and torturous trip to get there. You should read this book only to see what a great writer she has become and only...

mystery twists but not great connections between "who did it's" role in the book. Had trouble making the connections--but then I am not a detective.

I love Charlaine Harris' books of old...her Aurora Teagarden series, which ended rather abruptly when she moved on to the vampire series. I have not read any of these...couldn't get into vampires at the time. That may change, however, as my daughter is really wanting me to read the Twilight series.Time will tell...

This book by Harris has heroine Catherine Linton dealing with the recent loss of her parents, now being thrown into the middle of 2 more mysterious deaths. Is she the culprit or a victim in these foul deeds? Read the book to find out.

A fast read that took a surprising twist. I liked this book fairly well, but don't know if I will seek out more of her books.

I read the first two books in the author's Southern Vampire series and enjoyed her writing style. That being said, vampires aren't really my cup of tea so I wanted to try a different series by Harris. While looking for book 1 of the Teagarden or Shakespeare series, I found this, her debut novel, which was published in 1981. As to be expected, this is a mystery with a southern locale (rural Mississippi this time), and features a strong female character as the crime-solver, but alll of the characters are human.

At age 23, Catherine has returned to her hometown to live in the house where she grew up, left to her after her parents died in a car crash. She's believes the crash was no accident, and becomes even more convinced when she finds her father's nurse murdered. Her father had been the small town's doctor. A natural loner, Catherine has secluded herself from the townspeople and looks at everyone with suspicion. She does have two male admirers. One is a co-worker at the newspaper and rents the small house at the back of her property where her father had his office. The other is her boss, the owner of the newspaper that has been in his family for generations, and who also recently returned to town after his own father's death.

This was a very good mystery and an excellent debut novel.

If I hadn't already been a fan of Charlaine Harris' books and didn't know this was her first book, I would have really disliked this book and probably never read anything again by CH. This book was bit of a yawn. Simple in parts, contravied in other.

Not as good as other books she wrote after this one, but a decent first book. Kinda slow and seemingly pointless til you get to the end and go "Ohh!"

This was good, if a bit simple. Some of the characters weren't very fleshed out - but the main character and her relationships seemed sweet. The book seems like a short story, or a set-up for a series rather than a self-contained novel. (This is a re-release, and her writing is a lot better now).
